That little old franchise known as Halo has gone on to sell around 46 million games worldwide since Halo: Combat Evolved hit shops for Xbox in 2001 according to Microsoft.

The sales cover all the games released with a Halo prefix – including the Ensemble RTS Halo Wars – and puts the total revenue earned by the series at around $3 billion.  According to Microsoft, of that total $200 million was earned by Halo Reach in its first 24 hours on sale alone – a sales figure which broke entertainment release records in 2010.

Microsoft also estimates that 5 billion hours of play time has been logged by Halo players while connected to Xbox Live.

The next entry into the franchise – 343 Industries developed Halo 4 – arrives next week on Tuesday 6 November.
