Splinter Cell : Conviction – an exclusive…….a dying breed

by Victor ‘r0gue’ Vieira

Now that E3 has come and gone and I have had time to reflect on the upcoming games, its Splinter Cell that I am most keen on…..and well thank goodness I game on the Xbox 360, because it seems as this is definitely staying with Microsoft.

Ubisoft conducted a Q & A with fans on their forum and said regarding the exclusivity issue that “Splinter Cell Conviction is a true Microsoft exclusive title and there are no plans to have it go to other platforms.”

They explained their reasoning, citing the fact that the franchise appeared on the Xbox.

“There are several reasons behind this choice. First of all, the games are historically linked with Microsoft. The first game on the original Xbox was one of the first games to fully exploit the console’s technical possibilities. At the time, Microsoft really believed in the games potential and provided strong support to promote it. So there is a ‘link of heart’ between the franchise and the platform. Some games are like this (think of Final Fantasy for instance),” they said.

They added “the second reason behind this choice is purely linked to production. Having a single target platform means that we can optimize the game even further, because we only have one type of console hardware to support.”

Now with the announcements of late of a few ‘exclusives’ becoming non-exclusive, this really does surprise me. I would have thought that developers or publishers would be only be happy with ‘timed exclusivity’ but it seems as though this is final from Ubisoft.
