University Sport South Africa supported by the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture (DSAC) Launches a University Esports Challenge
This will be a dedicated programme for university esports development and structure
South Africa, 24 May 2021 – The University Esports Challenge will be for the benefit of all USSA member institution and will run for a period of four months from July to October 2021.
USSA launched its esports activities in September 2019 at the University of Stellenbosch, where a total of 12 Universities with over 127 gamers participated in a FIFA series. Due to the impact of COVID 19 and the restructuring of some of the USSA competitions, esports was one of those codes that had migrated to a fully online programme. The USSA Board is grateful to DSAC whom had fully funded the initial establishment of the Esports Challenge.
For the 2021 USSA Esports Challenge, the focus will be on the following titles:
- FIFA 21 1v1 (PS4)
- Clash Royale 1v1 (Mobile)
- League of Legends 1v1 (PC)
Each university will be represented by their top players in a thrilling USSA Esports Challenge! The action will culminate with a championship trophy final in October.
A spokesperson for USSA: “We therefore want to thank the Ministry of DSAC, the USSA Esports Executive Committee, and the USSA Member Institution for their continued support. The competition will be managed through the African Cyber Gaming League (ACGL) whom have partnered with USSA since 2019 for the delivery of The USSA Esports Challenge.”
The USSA Esports Challenge will be operated via the ACGL developed dedicated university esports platform ACGL Uni. The ACGL Uni platform offers South African universities a space to engage with their esports community and develop an internal esports infrastructure.
ACGL Verified universities will be able to host internal tournaments for a wide variety of titles with an Elo ranking system for players. Additional regular online tournaments will be hosted for a variety of titles for local students to compete in.
