Inafune entered gaming industry thanks to Mario

The gaming world has been very vocal and complimentary of the special Mario 25th birthday. In a special feature in Japanese magazine – Famitsu –  developers discuss Mario and his super series.

Various developers and other gaming heads paid tribute to Mario, his creator – Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto – and how they drew inspiration from the series in their own careers.

One of the foremost Japanese gaming figures, Keiji Inafune of Cacpom revealed, “The reason I entered the industry was because I encountered Mario and learned how interesting games can be. Thank you, Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto.” Kojima expressed his admiration for Miyamoto and his creation, calling Super Mario Bros. the ‘Mario Big Bang’. “Shigeru Miyamoto’s Super Mario Bros. changed the future not just of games, but for all of entertainment, and for myself as well,” said Inafune.

Our beloved Mario started in the arcade version of Donkey Kong in 1981, known only as a carpenter named “Jumpman.” He reappeared in Donkey Kong Junior in 1982, this time playing the part of the villain. Nintendo started development on a spin-off for “Jumpman” in 1983, while also giving him a new name and occupation. Mario Bros. was released later that year in arcades. 25 years later, Mario must still be the most recognised gaming figure.
