When you power up your Playstation 3 today, you will be asked to download the latest update. Then when you pop you Gran Turismo 5 disc in, you will be able to download the patch that turns the mechanical damage on.
Online mode will allow you to choose between light or heavy damage, or you can opt to leave it off.
The Gran Turismo 5 update is a 150MB.
