Fantasy Flight Games – producers of “cult classic” boardgames such as Arkham Horror and Twiligh Imperium – have announced the Gears of War boardgame which they say will bring a “fresh, bloody” title to their catalogue.
There is currently no release date for the game, but head over to their official site for updates.
The game will use a mix of dice-based and card-based play and will feature over 30 figures representing COG and Locust forces. The game adapts the Epic Games franchise with the hopes of retaining the series’ intense, cover-based shootout moments. Players will take control of any number of four COG soldiers and compete against the board to complete the objective of any of the seven missions provided. It will feature randomized maps – complete with a plenitude of chest-high walls! – and various “Order” cards which both boost players’ performance and represent health. The game promises to intrigue and challenge players from both the tabletop and video cultures.
Sounds like they’ve retained the essence of the franchise, however, without the familiar ticking of a grenade tag, I wonder how many players from the video game series will flock to the boardgame?
