The weeks are simply flying by! Get February off to a chilled start at your local cinema. Here’s what’s opening this weekend.
Anna Karenina
If you’ve ever tried to wade through one of Tolstoy’s door-stopper books, you’ll know it’s an epic task. So here’s your chance to see the epic tale on the big screen featuring the lovely Keira Knightley. She’s ideal for period films and this one sees her playing a married woman who falls head-over-heels for a handsome officer in Moscow. Unlike previous adaptations, this one includes more of Tolstoy’s original novel.
Lincoln
The American president takes to the screen yet again, but this time there are no vampires to be dispatched. Daniel Day-Lewis takes the lead as the man responsible for the 13th amendment which abolished slavery shortly before his assassination. That’s not a spoiler, right? Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays his son Robert alongside Sally Field as Mrs Lincoln.
Chasing Mavericks
Here’s one for all you surfers out there. It’s the true tale of young Jay Moriarty, a Santa Cruz surfer, and his mentor Rick “Frosty” Hesson, played by Gerard Butler. Jay dreams of being able to surf the monster waves at Mavericks, but he and Frosty have a lot of work to do before he is ready. Surf footage will appeal to fans of the sport.
Inbetweeners
A British sitcom about a bunch of suburban teens is given the big screen treatment. Four friends head over to Crete for a holiday filled with all the things teenaged boys love – mainly girls. Avoiding the usual touristy activities, like visiting historical sites, they head straight for the clubs and a series of disastrous failures when it comes to the opposite sex.
Klein Karoo
Donnalee Roberts plays Cybil, a teacher who dreams of starting a project for local children at a farm school, in Regard van den Bergh’s Afrikaans film Klein Karoo. She hopes to reach kids whose lives are affected by alcoholism, with the help of her friend Tim Theron. Beautiful scenery and homegrown romance abound.
Zombie Terri’s Pick
I feel like a little culture this week. And after having tried to get through Tolstoy’s War and Peace a couple of times I’m quite keen to see Anna Karenina brought to life on the big screen. Besides, I’m a sucker for anything with Keira Knightley in it.
