Doublesix (All Zombies Must Die) CEO James Brooksby believes innovation will drop on consoles, as he thinks the high costs that publishers undertake could provoke the publishers to take safer bets and use trusted development partners.
GamesIndustryBiz report that Brooksby believes the coming of the next-gen consoles is resulting in the industry being both excited and nervous.
“Having come back from GDC I saw excitement and fear in equal measure, I saw dismay and triumph. A step to the next generation of classical consoles seems to have fear in a lot of peoples’ eyes.”
“It still seems pretty scary for a lot of people, for developers and publishers alike. I think people will stick to proven development houses or in-house development which is going to be a challenge for the game development industry in the UK, and will probably mean there’s going to be less people around of that scale.”
This almost echoes Double Fine (Brutal Legend) boss, Tim Schafer’s predictions of publishers being unwilling to invest in unproven franchises.
These theories could result in smaller developers struggling and risk takers diminish considerably.
