imageYouTube is reportedly offering to purchase Twitch, the popular gaming broadcast service.

Variety reports [via MCV] that YouTube will pay $1bn for Twitch. YouTube is apparently just waiting on US regulators to inspect the proposed acquisition.

“The company expects the Justice Department to take a hard look at whether buying Twitch raises anticompetitive issues in the online-video market,” explains the source article.

Twitch PR representatives however won’t confirm the deal, saying it “doesn’t comment on rumours.”

Variety says the rumoured deal would be the most significant in YouTube’s history. This would be YouTube’s biggest deal since Google acquired it for over $1.65bn in 2006.

Twitch reportedly boasts over 45m monthly users, with over a million members uploading videos each month.
