At the time of writing it certainly seems to be a quiet month in South Africa. We may have missed something. In fact, we probably did, so how about telling us about your events then and we will update the information for you and the readers.
First Weekend (28 February to 2 March)
From 5pm on Friday (28 February) until 7pm on Sunday (2 March) you can catch a zombie and a few friends at this year’s Cape Town Tattoo Convention. We will be offering attendees a breakaway space to play a variety of titles over the weekend, so if you’re at Cape Town City Hall, come and say hi. We may bite… Head to our Facebook Event for more information.
This is the weekend that Ground Zero gets their LAN on. Saturday 1 March from 9am to 9pm at Tamboti Hall in Kiblerpark is the place to be for Ground Zero’s first LAN of 2014. For more details, check out the Facebook Event.
Second Weekend (7 to 9 March)
Orena‘s first of three cups starts on Tuesday 4 March. CS: GO will run online until Sunday 9 March and registrations close on Friday 28 February. Details, prizes and registration here.
The MSSA North West Championships are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. Head to the MSSA event announcement for all the necessary details.
Third Weekend (14 to 16 March)
Dota 2 gets some love from Orena. From 11 March until 16 March, the Dota 2 Cup will be run online. Registrations close on 7 March, but the tournament is quickly reaching its number limit of 32.
Hearth Battles, the online Hearthstone tournament organiser, will be hosting their first tournament on 15 March. Registrations for the ‘Mana Burn’ event close on 14 March. Details can be found here.
Fourth Weekend (21 to 23 March)
Orena will be hosting an online League of Legends tournament that starts on 18 March and concludes on Sunday 23 March. Details, and registrations, can be found here.
On Saturday (22 March), we zombies will be hosting a FIFA 14 Gaming Tournament at Trenchtown. All the details, as well as registration will be live on the site soon. Cash prizes and three platforms.
Fifth Weekend (28 to 30 March)
UCON 2014 rolls around on Saturday 29 March and Sunday 30 March. The UCT Genshiken Society event will feature cosplay, Anime, comics and gaming which will be hosted by your favourite (we hope) zombies. Details of the event can be found here, while details about the gaming (which includes an ‘Ultimate Gamer’ event will follow soon.
Coinciding with UCON, but a few thousand miles away, is the Call of Duty Championship. It has a South African connection, albeit a controversial one. 32 teams from around the world will be battling for their share of $1 million. Who says gaming doesn’t pay?
The FIFAChamps have not announced anything as yet for March, but we’re pretty sure they will be running something. Keep your eye on their Facebook Page.
- Durban’s FIFA tournament organisers, InZane Gaming Events have also not announced anything for March, but you never know still.
- MainGaming has also gone pretty quiet. Again, we suspect that they must be preparing something soon.
- 2upGamers and the EFL also appear to be on vacation. If any of these change, we will let you know.
Repeat events throughout February…
There are a few events which just keep on keeping on – sometimes weekly, sometimes daily. These are them.
Cape Town Showdown play host to the virtual fighters in their equivalent of the fight club every Saturday from 11am. The beatdowns happen at GamerNET House on 45 Salisbury Street, Boston, CT. Details can be found here.
The SA Forza 4 Drift Community will be hosting events this month as part of their World Drift Championship Series. We’d suggest heading over to their Facebook Page to keep in the loop.
The Cape Town zombie will be hosting a casual gaming night every Wednesday night from 7:00pm at Trenchtown in Observatory, CT. For more details as they break, keep your eyes here, there and on our social media.
Cape Town is also lucky enough to have a number of eSports Lounges operating now. There’s always something happening at one of them, so keep up to date by visiting their Facebook Pages: Games On, Bracciano’s and PS3 & PS4 Gaming Lounge.
Please note, if we have missed an upcoming event, it might be because we didn’t know about it. As much as we pretend to be know-it-alls, we’re not actually, and need your help in keeping up to date with all the happenings around this place we all call home. You can also keep up with everything happening by visiting our new Calendar. We will update both the calendar and this article if new events are announced for the month.
