This coming weekend sees rAge turn 16, and to celebrate they’re inviting you to join them at Ticketpro Dome in Gauteng to enjoy three days of gaming, geeking and gadgets.
And giveaways. There are always giveaways of some sort, and this year should be no different. One pretty cool giveaway suggests you “get your rAge Badger Passport and win a prize hamper valued at R24,000!” We would suggest that if you’re attending rAge this year, you get yourself entered into the giveaway as detailed here.
Discounts and specials are another great rAge institution and while we have no doubt there will be the usual humdingers at BT Games this year, those details are still to be revealed. However, there are some discounts on entry to the event that may appeal to you:
- Varsity students only pay R100 on Friday on presentation of their student card (available at the door only)
- School groups: School groups qualify for a R50 discount per person on Friday (available at the door only)
- Family Day Pass: R500 for two adults and two children aged 6-18 (available at the door only)
It will be a weekend of variety with cosplay featuring alongside the gaming. However, keep in mind that cosplay is not consent and if you want to enjoy the cosplay as a visitor, there are some common decency do’s and don’ts that you should consider.
Local game development talent will get to flex its muscles at the home_coded booth. Games being featured on the home_coded booth this year include Codex Knights, Loot Defence, Curve and Echoplex.
Sticking with games – what international games will you be able to try out before they release? Well, according to NAG, you will be able to get your paws on Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, The Division 2, Call of Duty Black Ops IIII, Spyro Reignited Trilogy, Starlink: Battle for Atlas, Super Mario Party, Forza Horizon 4 and Darksiders III. There are plenty of other (already) fan-favourites available to play too such as Fortnite, PUBG, FIFA 19 and more.
Fortnite will be (possibly) the most overplayed game at the event with Xbox South Africa hosting an event (which sees Xbox Ones up for grabs), as well as a community tournament. Apex Interactive have supplied Razer and Trust Gaming swag for the community tournament which will be hosted in the NAG LAN.
On the subject of the NAG LAN, this year sees the LAN spread around the venue a little differently to previous years, so attendees to the LAN should be aware of the who, the what and the where of attending the LAN. You can do just that by heading here. This year, the around 2,000 attendee LAN event is being sponsored by GINX Esports TV.
Exhibitors are a plenty this year. They range from the obvious (PlayStation, Megarom, Xbox and BT Games) to the not-so-obvious like… ABSA. Apex Interactive appears to be making themselves felt this year with a line-up of games and peripherals which includes a Trust Gaming debut and the Razer Phone.
There’s plenty more happening over the weekend with the NAG and Bravado Gaming esports workshop, We Think Code, Cooler Master and more in attendance.

LET THE GAMES COMMENCE
As gamers settle into three dedicated LAN areas to play games non-stop for 52 hours at the biggest and slickest LAN in Africa, visitors to rAge 2018 will be welcomed by the sight of a newly designed and larger show floor, featuring all that is great in gaming. The interactive and immersive gaming experience running from 5 to 7 October at The Ticketpro Dome is a magnet for fun for the whole family.
In addition to the abundance of games and gaming hardware, visitors will be able to get their hands on show specials, enter competitions and giveaways, compete in casual tournaments, and try out some of the latest tech and computer hardware.
Exhibitors such as Apex Interactive will be launching a host of new gaming products at the event, from major gaming brands such as Razer and Trust. The new lineup includes a wide variety of high-quality gaming peripherals, offering a range of features and price points to cater to gamers’ varied needs and budgets. Retailers such as BT Games and Incredible Connection will be offering rAge-exclusive specials and pre-orders on the latest games and products, with Matrix Warehouse also running show specials alongside fun visitor competitions with cool prizes up for grabs.
Ever wanted to “get your hands dirty” and learn more about case modding? Then be sure to get to the Cooler Master booth for demos, product showcases, gaming competitions, case mod comps, and much more.
What about getting your hands on a real gaming phone from Razer, which will be available at rAge at the Incredible Connection stand? Because “if it’s not 120Hz, it’s not a gaming phone”. It boasts the world’s first 120Hz screen on a mobile phone, and is powered by UltraMotion™ technology, ensuring and accurate touch response and zero lag or stutter: just fluid, buttery-smooth motion for all your games. The phone also boasts awesome sound and a seriously impressive battery life.
There’s even a chance for visitors to appear on TV! As the NAG LAN’s official sponsor and hosting their own stand on the show floor, GINX Esports TV is back at rAge again this year. Available in South Africa to DSTV Premium customers on channel 240, GINX Esports TV will have a lot of fun events happening for visitors to participate in.
While rAge is definitely fun, it’s also educational. For those visitors keen on a career in coding or gaming, there are some seriously committed companies who’ll be at the expo to guide visitors. The likes of WeThinkCode_ democratise education by making it open and accessible to all talented young people, and source high-potential software engineers regardless of previous education, financial means, or socio-economic background.
EmendyTechnology Institute, an accredited Higher Education Institution specialising in Game Development and Music Technology, will showcase everything visitors need to create original games, while organisations such as The Animation School can discuss career opportunities with you.
In addition to show specials, the organisers are giving students discounted access on Friday upon presentation of a valid student ID card, and schools will also get group scholar discounts on Friday.
