Gamer of the Week: Digital Ninja

We’ve mentioned before that there appear to be plenty of ninjas doing the rounds.  They shouldn’t by rights be so visible, as we always saw them as sneaky buggers hiding in the shadows.  We’re now getting pretty confident then that even this elite human fighting unit is less likely to prove a problem in the upcoming zombie apocalypse than originally thought.  We know all about you now.  Ever thought about that?!

Go ahead.  Introduce yourself.  Don’t be shy.

My real name is Andrew. I am married with two 2 kids. I am one of the older gamers out there.  I am passionate about gaming and have always been.

I am the Co-Owner of Sector 17 Gaming.

What’s you platform of choice?  Why?

I used to be a PC gamer, but that’s a lonely life! I choose now and forever XBOX as my favourite platform due to community. During my time on XBL I have met some awesome people and made some great friends.

Can you remember the first time you ‘gamed’?

That’s debateable, many will argue that you have not ‘gamed’ until you have played online. So I remember about 6 months ago!

How long have you been gaming?

Ever since I can remember.  I am a tad older than most in the gaming community, I come from the roots of gaming. I owned and played on a Commodore 64 as my first gaming system and later I got an Atari for my birthday, which I thought was the best thing in the world.

When do you think you’ll stop gaming?

Never! It feels good to own at times in the public games, then when asked how old I am to hear the shock that they just got owned by someone else’s daddy! I may consider stopping if I can’t see the screen or forget where I left my controller, but doubt it.

Are you a serious gamer?  Or do you enjoy a laugh?

Who doesn’t enjoy a good laugh? Those are always good to brighten your day. But for me it’s serious all the way. When your clan starts making a name for itself, people don’t seem to want to play for fun, which is a pity.  It’s all about making a name, either for them or for you.

Singleplayer or multiplayer?

Do games still come with a singleplayer?

Is playing online important to you?

Definitely. We keep telling the guys who come to our LANs: “You have not gamed until you play online!”

Are you a member of a clan?  Who are they and why?

Yes I am part of a clan. I belong to Sector 17. As I said earlier, gaming without community is lonely and not much fun. Since gaming is meant to be fun, it works in community.

Favourite game currently?

Well I have a few for different reasons:

Black Ops 2 – It’s the new MW3, and let’s face it, we all need the rush of a clan match. And Sector 17 all bought it on pre order. For once we are playing a competitive competition game on equal footing to other clans, unlike MW3 where we started playing it a year later.

Battlefield 3 – I lead a UK team of 26 players and we compete in international matches. I play for the Legion of Honor who are about 600 strong.

Medal of Honor Warfighter – I have player every MoH title since the beginning and the online objectives based games are decent.

Do you have any hobbies outside of gaming?  What?

Outside of gaming I am a family man.  If I am not gaming I spend time with the wife and kids. I also like to keep my mind active by studying and researching. I do this through many online correspondence courses. When it comes to active hobbies, I have a green belt in Muay Thai, but need to get more involved in that again.

You’re stranded on a desert island and a genie grants you five items.  Name them:

A game: Black Ops 2 without crashing servers or lag!
A CD: Avenged Sevenfold
A movie or TV series: Supernatural or Walking Dead
An organic life form: My wife (she allows me to game as much as I need!)
Something edible or drinkable: Pizza or pasta

What’s the most embarrassing or worst game you’ve ever bought or received as a gift?

Many may disagree here. I would have to say Dark Souls, simply for the reason that games are meant to be fun and enjoyed. It was one of the most stressful and frustrating games ever. Almost like its shorter, simpler counterpart… Limbo!

If you were a game designer, describe your ultimate game design.

For me a mash up of all my favourite games would be nice.

Imagine playing a FPS as normal but could at any moment stop trading bullets with a player and it would go into a turn based RPG where you could in an arena change your weapons and do a 1v1 deathmatch with Roman weapons.  All this taking place in an Assassins Creed or God of War environment where you can run along walls and interact with the world.

The zombie apocalypse has happened.  You’re facing down a ravenous zombie horde (which may or may not include members of ZG in bikinis).  What weapon do you grab?

Ordinarily I would say one of my favourite SMG’s , either the MP7 or the MCSC. But as we all know ammo is an issue and the reload times are too long! I would opt for a bludgeoning weapon, the thought of Casey Jones with a hockey stick comes to mind.

In the aforementioned zombie apocalypse you humans are all toast.  Become a turncoat and assist the superior zombies or stay with the soon to be wiped out human resistance?

Although the Zombie offer sounds good, my mates and I have been practicing Zombie mode on BO2… Bring it!!!

Thanks for taking the time to answer our silly questions.  What game are you off to play now that you’re done?

I am going to sharpen my skills in Zombie mode…. you know, just in case!

We welcome all gamers, regardless of age, sex, creed, platform or whether you’re human or zombie.  There’s no discrimination around here, so feel free to contact us if you are keen to feature in this column in the future at info@zombiegamer.co.za and we’ll think about – after you’ve sent us a sample of your braaaaaaiiiiinnnnsss.
