Today’s clan is one that is currently on the lips of many in the SA Call of Duty community. Team Opulence have recently gone from underdogs to the team to beat in just a few months, but the clan has not been an overnight sensation at all. Claiming two groups in the DGL Summer Leg, and the win on both PS3 and Xbox 360 in the recent MWEB GameZone Let’s Go tournament, they are now the team to beat in SA, and next weekend they will be on show at the MWEB GameZone Masters Series LAN.
Undead Ed came back from the frontlines with this on the clan.
Hello. Introduce yourself to the readers. Go on.
Hi my name is Clayton and I’m an alcoholic, no I kid, but I am Clayton aka Opulence Prime, and I am the leader, founder and manager of Team Opulence. I have been into competitive COD for nearly 3 or so years, but who’s counting right? [We would’ve been if we had fingers. And could count. – Undead Ed]
When did the clan form?
Team Opulence comes from extremely humble beginnings, we were originally a 21cT side, but I received all my mentorship prior to that by a man I consider a dear friend and a mentor, that being George ‘BarkieUK’, we left Clan OmCd and created RA-5, with his guidance and help I was able to develop as a gamer and as a leader, I may not be perfect at it, but I am continually growing, to cut a long story short, in 21cT I received a lot of help from Wrath, who helped me join a squad called the Deathwalkers. I quickly realised what I needed to do to get where I needed to be, and I started (after becoming team captain) recruiting the right players to help me get there, after the name change, we went through ‘waves’ of players, each wave becoming subsequently more powerful than the last, until we were in a position to recruit the right players, and here we stand, but there is still so much to do.
What is your platform (or platforms) of choice?
Xbox 360 and PS3.
What games does the clan enjoy?
Call of Duty, GTA5, Minecraft, Battlefield, Forza and Opulence Rocky, being the odd one out, likes Lego. We bought him some boxes the other day. 😛
How was the clan’s name chosen?
I didn’t like the name Deathwalkers, and felt we needed a change, I put it to a team vote on names, and after everyone put forward different names, the name Opulence was decided upon. It suits, Opulence means, wealth, to be abundant in something, for us, that is our bond, our clan is like family.
Who are the leaders of the clan and what is the clan’s organisational structure like?
Until now I have been the sole decision maker in the clan, however, I have recently decided that I need to make a ‘governing body’ per se. These will be 4 players I believe have the best and most mature input into the clan, and they will each have equal power in terms of decision making. I came to this as a decision purely because A: any successfully run company has a similar basic business model/management structure; and B: I have a very demanding Job, and if I am unable to help at any given moment, the ‘governors’ can cast a vote on anything without prior consent with me. If I roll over and die tomorrow, the clan must not fall into disarray.
How many members do you have? Keen to give out their names, credit card details and ID numbers?

How often do you play together as a clan?
Every single day.
Do you consider yourselves a competitive clan, or one in it more for “the shits and giggles”?
Nah we don’t take gaming seriously at all…. I KID! We are extremely competitive, we have it in our blood…
Has the clan participated in many tournaments? Which? Won any?
We have competed in 2 Trenchtown LANs, in the most recent one we came 2nd (before Deus) we competed in the MWEB 1st Recon (before Deus) and came 3rd, and the afriGHOSTs LAN where we came 5th with a pickups side. Recently, since forming Deus, we have won the MWEB LetsGO! Tournament on both the Xbox360 and PS3 platforms, and we have come top of our league tables for the TELKOM DGL summer leg, both Deus and Khaos took the double going into the playoff stages – we are very confident.
Is attending LANs important to the clan and its members?
Absolutely, LANs are where it’s at, and is a great way to grow the community, we love LANs. The more the merrier.
Are you guys actively recruiting for new players? If so, how should a potential member contact you and how do you decide on who is right to join you?
We are currently not recruiting, and generally we will get to know gamers in the community and they will grow on us, then should a spot become available we contact those players we see potential in and ask them to trial.
What are you hoping to achieve in the future as a clan?
We are hoping to win all the Ghosts tournaments in 2014, and ultimately we want to go to COD Champs next year. Everything we as a clan have done has been to materialise that ONE unified goal. We are hungry, and we believe we can trade blows with the best in the world, at this stage maybe just to make the world stand up and take notice of South Africa, but at a later stage to genuinely compete with them for the no1 spot, and if nothing else, to pave the way for future South African gamers to realise, nothing is impossible.
Which opposing clan(s) do you most respect?
Obviously there are teams out there we do not necessarily see eye to eye with, however, we still respect them, but I’d have to say there are a few, Team Adept obviously, for the massive shoes they have left to fill. Clan HI5 for everything they have done to contribute to the community. Vinco Gaming for doing the same, and consistently being a top side for years, then there are 2 clans that have really impressed me and remained dear friends, through their actions and ability you can’t help but respect – Ronin and Agency Gaming.
In regards to professional – or competitive gaming (or even gaming in general) – what do you as a clan think needs to be done to raise the profile of South African gaming?
This is a hard question, because I have my opinion but how we would do it is the other thing. I believe more LANs, big LANs, big event sponsors and there is a plan, but I definitely feel we need a league setup here. I think Telkom DGL has done amazing work with the implementation of their Summer Leg, that’s the start of what we need! But on a bigger scale, and a finale SA Champs per se, where there champions are crowned legitimately. We also need some sort of official points ranking system.
Some fun stuff:
If you weren’t a gaming clan you’d be…
A bunch of jock gym meatheads, cause we all lift brah! Except for Opulence Quik, he does this ballet with a ball… Oh I mean soccer.
War movie that best describes the clan?
300, because we have faced the odds, and we have become giant killers. We liked the title of underdogs.
If you guys had a music soundtrack for going to war, what would it be?
- Eye of the tiger.
- 2nd sucks – A day to Remember
- Own your world –Hatebreed
- Heretic Anthem – Slipknot
- Anything from Angerfist
- Rise against –worth dying for
- Abandon all ships- these are my brothers.
Thanks for your time – is there anything you would like to add before you head off?
Just to the new clans, the guys who are passionate about being the best – don’t doubt yourself, you can do anything you put your mind to, in the words of Kai Greene ‘you think it and it happens, you think it and it happens.’ Everyone laughed at me when I said I’d make the best clan in SA, and always remember – if you don’t ask, you don’t get!
Please note: Clan Q&A’s can be conducted up to four weeks before they are published so some information may already have changed.
