So far Undead Ed has managed to survive High 5’s advances and F34R’s, well, frightening demeanour, so we had high hopes of him getting through unscathed this time. However, we hadn’t anticipated the effect a stumbling zombie in a panda outfit would have on the public when we dropped him off at the train station to head off on his next assignment. Yes, there was screaming and general hysteria, but we’ve never seen him so happy with the choice of flesh he had. We felt a little like proud parents at that point. Until we realised how much explaining we’d need to do about social etiquette. “No young man, we can’t just go around eating everyone. You are not an animal.” Oh how we laughed.
Anyway, like that young zombie, today’s clan – Team XtaZ – is also relatively young. Having formed in May 2010, the team’s average age is around 18, but they certainly can play. They have just won the inaugural Clan Connection Modern Warfare 3 Tournament which goes along with a Battlefield 3 Tournament win and their regular ability to make the finals of tournaments. Take it away boys…
Congratulations on winning the inaugural Clan Connections/Mweb Gamezone Modern Warfare 3 Tournament – how was it for you guys?
Thanks, we had prepared well for this tournament, so all in all I was pretty confident we could take it. We did have a few tough matches, notably the semis vs CC, as well as some connection problems (Fallen and myself disconnected during the finals!) but we managed to pull through every time. We put a lot of effort into the strats, so that we knew what we were doing throughout the matches, and we were glad to see all our hard work pay off. It was very intense to play against good sides on the live stream, and we were pretty much overwhelmed with joy when we won. During the final moments of the last match, when we realized NBS would not be able to recover, we went quite mental… Good memories.
Is this your first tournament win?
We have also won the Xboxreel Battlefield Bad Company 2 tournament. Otherwise we made the finals in 2 other tourneys, and semis in one other.
You guys are an Xbox 360 clan who obviously specialise in first person shooters. Did you guys form due to a specific game? Are you now focused on Modern Warfare 3 exclusively?
We formed over the Call Of Duty series, especially COD4 and MW2. However we do play other shooters, such as Battlefield. At the moment we are very focused on Modern Warfare 3, because of the sheer skill our players have in the game, and because that is where all the competition is at these days.
How much time a week do you guys play/practice for?
We play around 5-6 hours a week when there are no competitions, trying to get at least one clan game a week. When there are tournaments approaching we can easily double that amount of time.
According to your DoGaming profile, you formed in May 2010 – how many members were you at the beginning?
When we first started, we had 5 members.
How many members are you currently? Keen to give out their names, credit card details and ID numbers?
Alright, only Gamertags will do.
At the moment there are 8 players in XtaZ (although some are inactive) :
Are you guys actively recruiting for new players? If so, how should a potential member contact you and how do you decide on who is right to join you?
At the moment we aren’t recruiting, because we have our 4man and 5man squads set. We feel it unnecessary to have too many players, as it makes it harder to keep one tight effective competitive unit. When we need a new player, if we don’t have someone in mind, we pass the message around that XtaZ is going to have trials. We usually get loads of players wanting to attend them. Then we have what we call the X(taZ)-Factor. Basically we do lots of test matches, and we look for a player that stands out. It takes us a while to make a decision.
Do you consider yourselves a competitive clan, or one in it more for “the fun of it”?
We consider ourselves very competitive, thus our full name being Team XtaZ. We hate loosing, and we are always looking to improve. Of course, we still mess around and have fun on a daily basis.
What are you hoping to achieve in the future as a clan?
In the future we would like to win more competitions, just generally carry on dominating the competitive scene, and get our name even further out there. We are also aiming to get sponsored within the near future.
Which opposing clan(s) do you most respect?
We respect Hi5, CC and the once-present TEC9 the most.
In regards to professional – or competitive gaming – what do you as a clan think needs to be done to raise the profile of South African gaming?
XtaZ would like to see a lot more clans, and competitive teams being created. The gap between the top team’s level and the others is very big, so we’d like the newer clans to play and learn from the top teams (and to learn from losses, don’t be sour about them !). We also think that competitive console gaming in South Africa needs a lot more exposure, so that we can get more public interest, as well as more competitions.
Right, let’s have a little fun…
The zombie apocalypse has (as we’ve been predicting for a while now) happened. Your clan is trapped in an undefendable building with no escape route. However, if you sacrifice a member to distract the undead, you can slip away… Do you and who is the unlucky chap (or lass)?
I would definitely send out SyNerGy, because he is a THREAT! And he knows how to bait. (in-clan joke that nobody will understand)
Your clan needs a mascot. Due to a successful series of tournament wins you get sponsored by Disney who (and you should’ve read the fine print) insist that it needs to be one of their “cuddly characters”. Daisy Duck or Minnie Mouse? Why?
It would have to be Daisy Duck, because we kinda feel bad about constantly killing her virtual cousins, the chickens in MW3.
If you guys had a music soundtrack for going to war, what would it be?
It would be Seven Nation Army Remix, by the Glitch Mob, all the while screaming Leeerrrroyy Jeeenkins !
Thanks for your time – is there anything you would like to add before you have to go back to the day- to-day grind?
The XtaZ motto is Capax Infiniti. It means “capable of the infinite” . This really represents what every XtaZ member stands for, and the mindset that we have.
We are always up for a challenge, feel free to contact any of our members for a match!
