We can tell you now, that Undead Ed fears no-one. Except maybe Tallahassee* when he’s got a Twinkie craving. So what’s there to fear from F34R itself Undead Ed wondered out loud as he stumbled out on to his next assignment dressed – as any self-respecting zombie would when trying to avert attention – in his panda outfit. Whether the look of terror in his (dead) eyes was due to his experiences with F34R or the escaped male grizzly bear has not been confirmed… He curtly and simply says: “I don’t want to talk about it”.
So here is the second of our weekly profiles of players in the South African gaming scene. And it’s F34R!
So who exactly are F34R then? Well, they are a PS3 clan which formed with around eight members about four years ago on the back of Call of Duty 4. They have grown a bit since then and are now 14 members strong with a second team consisting of “youngsters who will hopefully take over when we call it quits…” – so says F34R’s leader JaKeZ who was kind enough to answer our silly questions. They still remain firmly rooted in Call of Duty – Modern Warfare 3 being the game of choice now – but let’s dig a little deeper…
Are you still on the same platform or have you moved on?
Yes we are still on the same platform , some of us have played on xbox but prefer the community that we grew up playing cod on ….
We are a multi national clan , we have members that are South African , Greek , Portugese ….We have played over 50 clan matches over the years from that we have only lost 3 ….
Do you consider yourselves a competitive clan, or one in it more for “the shits and giggles”?
That is a hard 1 I would say both , when we play we play to have fun we always messing around having fun , talking crap , doing stupid things , even when tournaments come around we mess around in the matches , we never practice or plan any strategies …We do want to win though but its no use winning if you not having fun …
Won any tournaments you feel like bragging about?
We have actually won most of the tournaments we have played in every tournament we played and won we never lost a single game from group stage, not sure how many we have played, think we won 8 of the 10 we played ….We recently won the maingaming MW2 tournament which we were undefeated, we are also the current Telkom Do Gaming Champions…
Are you guys actively recruiting players?
At the moment no , our clan is big enough as it is , I always believe in giving all members fair game time , with a bigger clan it becomes harder , if a member leaves then yes we would look for some new blood….
How do you decide on who is right to join you?
We look at how the guy will gel with the team but mainly the character of the person , we have some members in our clan who are not amongst the best , and I have had people tell me these guys are not good enough to be in our clan , but getting a lot of kills and owning is not what we only look at , being a team player is more important ….
Clan you respect/hate the most… (delete where not applicable)
We honestly respect most of the clans in our community , if you look at how they have grown over the years you have to respect that , clans like EvO , Dice , Lost , D2u have become really competitive and that is only good for our community ….There is 1 clan we do hate and that would be a new clan who just started playing called Death , they a bunch a kids who think they the greatest who only play in 6 man parties in local games against people with 2 right sticks ….They would never play without a party and against locals who have been playing the game for a while…..
What are your plans for the future?
Well, it’s hard to say. Some players move on and get other priorities in life, but F34R will live on, and as long as there are fun and competitive FPS games to keep everyone happy, we want to always move on and keep being as good as we can be.
Let’s be a little less serious for a bit – If you weren’t a gaming clan you’d be…
Professional wedding planners, but when I say professional, I mean the type who think they are professional but are actually quite rubbish.
You have a clan mate pinned down by enemy fire. On the other hand, there’s a case of cold beers (or other drink of choice. Or any vice of choice, but please elaborate) back in the HQ. Do you send the squad to a certain death to rescue your clan mate? Or chill at the bar and drink a toast to his “valour”?
We’d do what any other self respecting man would do in times like these… Chill at the bar and drink a toast not to his valour, but rather to his idiocy for getting himself in that situation to begin with.
The zombie apocalypse has happened – we always knew it would. You’re all toast unless you stick together. Half the clan wants to keep moving and the other half wants to barricade themselves in. How would you decide on the best course of action?
We take pride in ourselves knowing that whenever we say stick together, watch my back, cover me, and so forth… That there is always that one team mate who never listens and goes guns blazing generally resulting in his necessary and timely death, and leaving the rest of us in the situation addressed in the previous question.
Thanks for your time – we know it’s tough to put the controller down. Is there anything you would like to add before you go back to pwning n00bs?
The only thing we’d like to say is this… We’ve been playing the game as long as the ps3 has been around for basically. We’ve seen many great guys, and many not so great guys (if you know what I mean) come and go. We can only say that although it is a competitive game, and tempers will flare from time to time, don’t take it too seriously. Have fun, mess about and who cares what your stats say.
Stats isn’t what makes the player. What makes any player great, is how they convey positive attitude inside the game, and outside of the game. the only way to do that is to have fun!
Thanks to F34R for taking time out from life and killing to answer the questions – you almost made Undead Ed fear you as much as he does Tallahassee*.
Next week we will be featuring the Clan Connection Modern Warfare 3 winners Team XtaZ. Be sure not to miss it. But we’ll remind you.
If you are keen to feature in this column in the future, please feel free to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll think about – after you’ve sent us a sample of your braaaaaaiiiiinnnnsss.
