Astra EmblemThis week we catch up with a clan that are still young enough not to say: “back in my day”. Team Astra only formed around five months ago and have already impressed with a second place, silver medal finish at the MSSA Western Cape Provincial Championships – which just happened to be their first LAN event to boot.

Will the team be around for a while? They say they will be. So a team for the future then? Find out more about Team Astra from the mouth of Astra Viper.

Team Astra only formed in May this year. The team is also generally young. Is this the first clan most of the members have been in?

No, all the members were in different clans before Astra. 🙂

Who are the current members in the clan and what are their roles?

Astra Viper-Obj
Astra Frost-Obj
Astra Fusionz-Slayer
Astra Eos-Anchor

You recently competed in your first LAN too, and impressed may experienced players by finishing second. How did you all find the experience?

LAN is a completely different environment. It was great to meet everyone and prove ourselves. It was definitely a great experience.

You also ended in the top three of the most recent MWEB ladders. Being that consistent must take a lot of practice. How often and long do you practice for?

To be honest, we don’t practice, we scrim once in awhile though and just hope for the best. 😉

With the team having such a young average age, you have a lot of years ahead of you. Is Astra in it for the long haul?

We are planning on keeping Astra going and hopefully lasting long. I (Astra Viper) made this team with the intention of it being my last, we’ll just see how it goes.

Are you only a Call of Duty focused clan? Any other games you for a change of pace?

Yes, Call of duty is our main focus, but all of us do enjoy GTA5 as well.

Is the clan based exclusively on Xbox360?  Any plans to expand to the ‘other’ platform, or stick with Xbox One when it launches?

Yes, we are an Xbox 360 only clan. We plan on moving to Xbox One once competitive in South Africa moves over.

Are you guys actively recruiting for new players?  If so, how should a potential member contact you and how do you decide on who is right to join you?

We are trying to keep the team as small as possible so unless a player leaves us we are not recruiting.

What are you hoping to achieve in the future as a clan?

Our main goal is to inspire young gamers that age is just a number and if you want something, go and get it. 😉 Also we want to grow Esports in South Africa and hopefully be known as one of the top teams in the country.

In regards to professional – or competitive gaming – what do you as a clan think needs to be done to raise the profile of South African gaming?

We need to venture out and start getting our name out there by maybe scrimming International teams, trying to qualify for international tournaments and stuff like that, but first we need to get our standards to International level.

Right, let’s have a little fun…

If you weren’t a gaming clan you’d be…

Taking sports more competitively.

War movie that best describes the clan – Platoon or Tropic Thunder?

Tropic Thunder. 😉

Thanks for your time – is there anything you would like to add before you head off?
