THQ drops Games for Windows Live, sticking with Steamworks

This should come as no surprise as it looked like it was on the cards last month already when THQ confirmed that another Warhammer 40k: Space Marine would only ship with Steamworks and with Games For Windows Live. Now the publisher in conjunction with developer Relic, will not include titles for Microsoft’s Games For Windows Live  for any of their upcoming Warhammer 40k titles.

Apparently with Dawn of War II the problem is that players still need a Steam account, which means multiple logins to play. So in future standalone strategy expansion Dawn of War II: Retribution will only use only Valve’s Steamworks. THQ revealed in a statement that this new back end will allow players to invite friends into matches from their Steam friends lists and take advantage of the full set of Steam community features including groups, achievements, and Steam overlay chat channels, and that THQ will also include an all new matchmaking and ranking set up specifically built for Dawn of War II – Retribution.

The benefits are evident  with Steamworks which will allow features like guest passes, free multiplayer weekends, pre-loading and the ability to provide fast turn-around on future patches and updates.

I can actually hear PC gamer’s shouting for joy. Fact remains Steamworks is a firm favourite and hassle free!
