Yes, I’m not about to deny that my first impression was that the game was slightly reminiscent of Titanfall. That is not meant as a negative compliment at all. For me, Titanfall has proved to be the most fun I’ve had in multiplayer for a very long time. Advanced Warfare doesn’t have Titans and wall running, but it still seems so very unique compared to previous iterations of Call of Duty, while still remaining clearly a Call of Duty game.
However, Titanfall was never going to sate the eSports and events lust I have, and might never prove to be the spectator thrilling LAN and online beast that Black Ops II was. Thanks to Sledgehammer listening to the community, it appears Advanced Warfare will do exactly that however.
The important thing is that there is clearly still an attempt to not alienate the more casual players while ensuring the truly competitive players are still catered for. The Pick 13 (‘Create-a-Class’) system allows for players to choose one to four Scorestreaks at the risk of reducing the number of attachments they can slap on their weapon. This will most likely mean casual players selecting fewer Scorestreaks to increase the number of Perks or weapon attachments. The Scorestreaks will also feature a co-op portion. Any member of your team can essentially piggyback your Scorestreak and earn assist points and is the “perfect example of teamwork”.
Elements such as ‘Create-an-Operator’, ‘Virtual Firing Range’ (test out your class before heading into battle) and ‘Virtual Lobby’ (where you can check out opponents and their classes before a match) will appeal to both the casual and competitive player, because let’s be honest, we all like to rock our own personalised look.
The Bad (Maybe)
The ‘Supply Drop’ (and possibly things like the verticality and cloaking available due to the Exo-Skeleton) may well be the element that gets under the skin of some players. Supply Drops are a little like Titanfall’s ‘Burn Cards’ and are random loot items earned by completing challenges and come in varying rarities. The skills brought about by the Exo-Skeleton are again pretty familiar to players of Titanfall and include the aforementioned cloaking, as well as increased speed, enemy pinging and more. Other than some players needing to come to terms with these additions, they will definitely change the way Call of Duty multiplayer is played after the game launches in November.
There are new weapons (like you didn’t expect that), including the directed energy weapons which don’t rely on reloads, but can overheat.
The Ugh… Awesome
This is where we started to get excited. Four maps were revealed and they seemed pretty decent at a cursory glance. Biolab (close combat), Riot (a prison), Ascend (three lanes were mentioned making us chuckle like Call of Duty was a MOBA…) and Defender (a medium-sized map in San Francisco with a tsunami).
Then our undead heart skipped a number of beats. Hardpoint. 12 modes on launch, a number of returning modes and new modes, including Capture the Flag, Search and Destroy, Domination, Momentum and Uplink. And did we mention… HARDPOINT?
And… eSports. Yes, Sledgehammer really listened and are promising an expanded broadcaster mode, Private Match rule-set value slider, LAN lobbies, round-based Domination, expanded Oracle mode, Ranked Playlists and more.
Activision did end the reveal by announcing the ‘Day Zero’ edition of Call of Duty Advanced Warfare. This version of the game is a pre-order only version and will allow players access to the game one day earlier than everyone else, as well as featuring double XP on 3 November, an ‘advanced arsenal’ and two custom weapons.
It all seems rather peachy doesn’t it? Well, it probably is until we all get to play it, at which time we can only hope it lives up to the hype and delivers on its promise. Otherwise, there’s always Titanfall. It also has Hardpoint…

In addition to the multiplayer premiere, Activision today announced the Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Day Zero Edition, which offers fans for the first time 24-hour early access to the game starting November 3rd. The Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Day Zero Edition is available on all platforms to customers who pre-order the game* and pick up on day zero – at no added cost. Collector’s Edition copies of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will also be available for Day Zero early purchase and play, and will include the special Day Zero Edition content. In addition to the early access of up to 24 hours in some territories, the Day Zero Edition also includes two new, custom weapons as well as the previously announced Advanced Arsenal incentive.

The technology of the future in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare wouldn’t be complete without advancement in weapon technology, beginning with the debut of a directed energy class of weapons. This all-new weapon class for Call of Duty uses the power of focused energy to overcome enemies and relies on tactical heat management instead of reloads. Players can test out this new class, along with all their weapons, on the new Virtual Firing Range, a brand new feature that allows players to instantly test-drive their favorite weapon loadout with the click of a button before the next match starts.

Featuring 12 modes out of the box on day one, led by fan-favorites Capture the Flag and Hardpoint, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare‘s multiplayer modes not only include classics such as Team Deathmatch, Domination, and Search and Destroy, but also new options for the playlist such as Uplink and Momentum, a new take on the classic War mode.
Sledgehammer Games is also taking personalization to the next level with Create-an-Operator, a new character system, which allows players to personalize their soldier however they want from heads, helmets, eyewear, shirts, vests, kits, gloves, pants, knee-guards, boots and even the exoskeleton itself. Create-an-Operator is bolstered by a brand new reward system called Supply Drops. The more someone plays, the more they earn. In addition to showing off their Supply Drops gear in-game, the new Virtual Lobby lets players display their hard-earned challenge rewards and rare items, while waiting for the map to start.
