Playstation 3 fans will soon be asked to download the new system software update, v3.72. The Playstation Blog say this is minor update and that the system stability during use of PS3 format software and network services has been improved.
The next update for the PlayStation 3 has been detailed by PlayStation.blog, and it brings some pretty decent features with it – especially if you’re a PlayStation Plus member. Expect it “soon”…
**UPDATE**
It appears it is already available for download in the US at the very least.
Now before everyone runs off thinking that this is the start of ‘Cloud Storage’ and other awesome features… it’s not. Today’s update is purely a preparation for the “additional system enhancements coming to Xbox 360 later this year”.
The new firmware update that was promised “soon” is here already. According to reports, it appears to only be a security update with a few fixes to make PS3 more stable. There appears to be no new features, and there have been very minimal reports of system problems coming after the release. The firmware was released to certain (unconfirmed) regions…
Along with mentioning “soon”, “minor update” and “network services…improved”, the post on PlayStation.Blog says very little more. A new PS3 system software update, v3.66, will be released soon. With this minor update, system stability during use of PS3 format software and network services has been improved.
If you decided to pop your Xbox 360 version of Homefront in your console yesterday, you would’ve received a new update and the ‘Ability’ Pack.
To further sweeten the Homefront news, the first DLC for the game will be released on June 7. Entitled Fire Sale, the add-on will include two new maps that “will carry you further into the heart of a war torn and twisted America.” No price announced yet, but it will launch on the Xbox 360 first.
And there’s still more…
A new automatic Title Update is out today for L.A. Noire on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Major Nelson has posted a clarification regarding the concern over the new Xbox 360 disc format’s compatibility with older consoles – and the news is good. The replacement plan that was covered here, was related to a previous update. And there are no compatibility issues with the new disc format and older consoles. Phew.
Kotaku have seen a verified email from Xbox LIVE customer support that claims a “very small number of Xbox 360 owners” are unable to play from retail discs following the new update.
**UPDATE**
It has been confirmed by Major Nelson that this replacement plan for the issue was related to a previous system update of the console. Check here for more details.
The PS3 firmware update that brings improved security and a cloud based save service is now live. In addition to that, non PS+ users can enjoy setting “the amount of time before a controller turns off after you have stopped using it.”
