Super Mario Bros. Creator: “I’m going to retire, I’m going to retire”

Thankfully, Miyamoto now aged 59, is not completely closing the curtain on gaming, but has told Wired.com in an interview that he is stepping down from his current position to concentrate on smaller, more personal projects.

Any avid gamer from any generation should know the name of the grand creator of ‘Super Mario Bros.’, ‘Donkey Kong’ and the more recent ‘The Legend of Zelda’. Miyamoto will remain at the company and plans to let younger developers take the helm of the bigger projects.

Miyamoto told Wired that at his offices he has recently been declaring “I’m going to retire, I’m going to retire,” but also clarified that he would only be retiring from his current position.

“What I really want to do is be in the forefront of game development once again myself, probably working on a smaller project with even younger developers. Or I might be interested in making something that I can make myself, by myself. Something really small.”

Miyamoto revealed that he plans to start on the project next year and will hopefully have something to show before the year (2012) is out.
