I stumbled upon SpecialEffect yesterday, embarrassingly for the first time, a charity organisation that uses technology to better the life of people leaving with disabilities. The organisation’s primary function is adapting games and the technology around them so that disabled children can play them.
Director, Mick Donegan explains that SpecialEffect was needed because with many disabilities, the majority of computer games are simply too quick or too difficult to play.
SpecialEffect works alongside these struggling children and their parents or carers to find out which games the disable can play, or adapt the games that they can’t. As an avid gamer, one can only imagine the improvement in quality of life these disabled children receive thanks to SpecialEffect’s work.
The SpecialEffect team consists of specialist professionals who have many years of experience in designing and adapting technology to help young people with physical and learning difficulties.
SpecialEffect assists in the following ways:
- By adapting, developing and modifying cutting edge technology in our GamesLab and enabling young people to try out in a session in our GamesRoom.
- By supporting hospitals, hospices, special schools, etc in finding the right leisure technology for those young people who need it most, when they need it most, through our Roadshows.
- By loaning and supporting specialised games technology to young people through our Loan Library.
- By loaning and supporting gaze-controlled computers to people who have been paralysed due to a sudden injury or illness through our StarGaze Project.
- By providing information and training both at our Accessible Games Centre and through our website, in particular our Accessible GameBase.
Zombiegamer thinks this is an outstanding organisation and so we would like to help get the word out. For much more information, or if you are in a position or want to donate to the charity now or in the future, please see the official site.
