Soul Sacrifice


Soul Sacrifice, by the legendary Keiji Inafune, is a brutal RPG-action game that absolutely serves the PS Vita well. It features a sophisticated combat system that gives you an abundance of choice and therefore keeps you thinking. The fairly deep RPG-like progression system will also keep you wanting, and wonderfully strange narrative will keep you interested.

Gameplay and Features

Soul Sacrifice’s narrative is a dark fantasy which through a powerful and magical book – Librom – takes players back to play through the sorcerer’s memories. There is a fairly deep RPG element that players can tinker with, from the fairly standard look of the sorcerer that can be customised, to the satisfyingly deep attacking mechanics – from melee or weapon-yielding mechanics to magic attacks. The overall aim is to page through the book of Librom, relive past battles and build up your sorcerer to face the mighty Magusar in the final battle. There are plenty of missions of battles as well as side-missions to choose from to get to the point where you feel you are ready for Magusar.

The main draw of the game is the almost turn-based fighting mechanics. Your attacks do happen in real time, but the various face buttons are mapped with different attacks. This mechanic is an absolute joy to work with, from needing to choose the right attack combinations for the various battles, to the abundance of what’s on offer. You are constantly unlocking new attacks, and then building them up, so this becomes very addictive – trying everything out, working out what works best and where.

As you defeat your foes, you will choose whether to sacrifice that soul to build up your either your attacking level, or health level. The entire game is all about the choices you will have on offer and the choices you make, so this assures you that no two playthroughs will be the same. Players will build their characters up differently, and map out their attacking differently, it’s all about the choice. Your choice’s even lead to different sub-missions. If you either sacrificed or save a fallen one, different missions and will open up or close.

Sound and Visuals

Soul Sacrifice looks great on the PS Vita. The graphical quality is very good and the frame rate does not fall off with the intense action, showing off the Vita’s processing power. As for the narrative, well, it was a wonderfully strange experience for me. It is very typical Japanese fantasy theme, meaning quirky and generally over-the-top, but interesting nonetheless and deep enough to keep me interested in more than just the frantic gameplay. Still, talking to a book and wiping its tears, was just bizarre. I do like that the creator’s mind is so far out there that he could conceive something so eccentric. After all, that is what we want from creative types instead of banging out more of the same.


The verdict

Soul Sacrifice is one of the best additions to the PS Vita line-up. While it doesn’t include gimmicky features using the touch-screen, overall it feels like a game you would find on the Vita’s big brother console.

As a game as a whole; the abundance of attacking options, the RPG-like progressive system and the quirky yet interesting narrative makes it one hell of an addictive game. The action is brutal, intense and ultimately satisfying. If you have a Vita, this is one you will want in your collection.
