Obviously, it’s pretty safe to assume that there are gamers in every walk of life. However, unlike jumping on a Harley Davidson, sometimes it’s not quite so cool to tell your friends you’re a gamer. A biker is so much more “dangerous” – gaming is for kids… So, it’s always pretty encouraging to discover gamers and zombie lovers in slightly more “high profile” places.
Recently we discovered that we had a supporter who is part of the 5fm morning show. Trying not to act as giddy as teenage girls standing next to Justin Bieber, we played it cool until we saw the perfect opportunity to pick his braaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiinnnnnnsssss. And to our surprise, Sias du Plessis let us do just that. Clearly he’s a zombie lover. He’s also now a protected human when the zombie apocalypse happens. Well, until we’ve harvested the rest of you of course.
What most people probably know about you (and by your own account): You’re a husband and a father. You’re a sports-mad Ginger. You present sport on 5fm in the mornings and commentate on EFC Africa. Can we add gamer and zombie lover to that list?
Yes you can, but let’s go with wannabe gamer. I love my first person shooter games and have been obsessed with Zombies since season 1 of the Walking Dead.
What’s your gaming platform of choice and why?
I started on Playstation and have followed the PS2 and the PS3, so I am kind of used to it and don’t see myself changing. I tried the PC, but prefer the controller in my hands instead of finding keys – does that make any sense? [It does to us. But then we’re all decaying fingers anyway. – Undead Ed] On PC I like the strategy games, Age of Mythology, Command and Conquer, Civilisation etc.
Favourite game at the moment?
COD Black Ops 2 and MOH Warfighter. Oh and FIFA 13, wait and Resident Evil 6.
What’s your favourite zombie related game? Choose carefully, we don’t like to talk about zombie genocide around these parts…
Ha ha, I love Zombies remember? Resident Evil 4 was the benchmark for me – loved that game and played it over and over. Legendary.
Which upcoming game or games are you most looking forward to?
So many…hmmm, let me think, Zombie U, looks amazing. The WiiU is quality and can’t wait to get my hands on it.
How long have you been gaming and can you remember the first time you ‘gamed’? And on what console or platform?
I was bit of a late starter, but I would say 12 years now, started with the Champ Manager PC game and then progressed into the Age of Mythology before the Resident Evil series got me hooked.
Do you prefer a good singleplayer campaign or do you dip your toe into the online world of multiplayer?
Love a good single player campaign, but I do dip my toe into the online world of multiplayer, sometimes you need a break from the campaign stuff and feel like kicking ass online.
Given all that keeps you busy, do you find much time to play games?
I squeeze in some gaming whenever I get a chance, it has become bit of an escape for me, even a stress reliever at times, I try to find a balance between my training, family, work and gaming, so far it is going well, but I would love an extra hour a day to squeeze in some gaming.
You probably have plenty of other hobbies outside of gaming – what keeps you entertained in your downtime?
Family and friends play a big part in my life, but I recently started boxing to stay fit and even though it is early days, I love it. I also enjoy paddling and catching a good zombie movie when the opportunity presents itself. [We like catching a good human. Movie. – Undead Ed]
You’re a Newcastle United fan… Ever booted up FIFA after they’ve lost a game to exact revenge on their real life opposition?
They seem to be losing plenty lately, so the answer is more often than I would like. Come on the Toon!
Is there any gaming character that best reflects you as a person? Or a gaming character you wish you could actually be?
I would love to have the skills that Kratos from God of War possesses, I think I am like Chris Redfield from Resident Evil, don’t laugh! Passionate, loyal, chilled, patient and ready to take on any zombie outbreak.
You’re stranded on a desert island and a genie grants you five items. Name them:
A game: Zombie U
A CD: The Offspring – Greatest Hits
A movie or TV series: The Walking Dead
An organic life form: Does Bear Grylls count?
Something edible or drinkable: Loads of coffee, jelly beans and ginger biscuits
The zombie apocalypse has happened. You’re facing down a ravenous zombie horde (which may or may not include members of ZG in bikinis). What weapon do you grab?
Samurai sword, it never runs out of ammo.
In the aforementioned zombie apocalypse you humans are all toast. Become a turncoat and assist the superior zombies or stay with the soon to be wiped out human resistance?
You said some zombies may be in bikinis? I love zombies, but I would have to stay with the warmbloods.
