SA Gaming News Wrap

SA gaming, you’re a beautiful and ugly thing at the same time. And that is why we love you like we do. This is the stuff that went down this past week, and the stuff that will be coming along over the next week or so.

Oh, and in case you missed it, the Xbox One will be released in South Africa in September.

MSSA Press Conference

It happened by all accounts, but was equally farcical by the very same accounts too. We weren’t there, but we knew plenty of humans that were.

#egmr said the conference “turned into an excuse throwing farce” and that the new President of MSSA didn’t even “adequately prepare” for the press conference.

LazyGamer who – by their own account – were one of “three journalists and two eSports advocates” at the press conference felt it was a “sad day for SA eSports”. We won’t take the “local media doesn’t actually care about eSports” comment to heart, as we also aren’t one of the “leading publications” out there…

MWEB said that the “MSSA and especially Mr Maphumulo wasted one of the most important opportunities to communicate with the SA eSports community.”

So quite frankly, it appears no change is actually going to happen under the “new” leadership at the MSSA. Unlike zombies, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks…

Fairbairn FIFA 14 Tournament

Fairbairn_01Meanwhile in Cape Town, the zombies descended on Fairbairn College in Goodwood, CT to bring the first (of hopefully many more) competitive gaming events to the school.

As with the event hosted at Fairmont High School late last year, this was just the early phase of an expanding school plan that your friendly neighbourhood zombies are working with the humans at MWEB GameZone on.

FIFA 14 was the game on the agenda, and with over 50 enthusiatic players in attendance for both a 2v2 and 1v1 tournament, it was a full, but rewarding, day of action.

The 2v2 double elimination tournament proved especially entertaining, with the pupils showing some real talent, and many of the later matches being tense affairs decided on penalties. The final was between Team 18 (known as ‘Bomb Squad’) and Team 2 (going by the name of, erm, ‘She was only X1′), who had met each other in the semi-finals (or winner’s bracket final), where Bomb Squad proved the stronger team and took the match 2-0. However, She was only X1 then came back from the loser’s bracket, and ensured it wasn’t going to go the same way in the final, and took the first match with penalties, forcing a second game in the final.

This match was a real humdinger, and saw the first ’90’ minutes end 1-1. Extra time saw She was only X1 turn it on and they went 3-1 up as the half-time whistle went in extra time. Within seconds of the restart, Bomb Squad hit back and the game hung in the balance. However, resolute defending saw She was only X1 hold on to their 3-2 lead and bag the win, along with R250 Kalahari vouchers each, which were sponsored by MWEB GameZone.

The singles also tossed up some mouthwatering matches, with the final being decided between the day’s two most consistent players – Deogracias and Yasheen. The road to the final followed the same set of results as the 2v2 tournament, only this time, it didn’t require a second game in the final. Deogracias remained undefeated throughout the tournament to take it 3-2 in the final. He also scored a R250 Kalahari voucher for his efforts.

You can see photos from the event here.

Some fantastic coverage of the day by Brainwavez.org.

Our thanks to the pupils, teachers and headmaster of Fairbairn College for allowing us to take eSports to their school. A thanks to MWEB GameZone for sponsoring the Kalahari vouchers.

So where to from here? The battle of the ‘Fairs’ is being planned, with both schools signed up, and only a date to be finalised. We will also be heading to Fairmont High School on 28 March, where we will be hosting the next phase by expanding the titles played to Call of Duty.

Orena

Orena_CroppedBravado Gaming became the Orena Dota 2 champions this past Sunday. The organisation was pretty much guaranteed a champion with both their bvd.blue and bvd.black playing. However, it was bvb.black that proved the stronger of the two on the night and walked off 3-0 winners. Other than bragging rights, the team walked off with R7,000 and some SteelSeries products, while bvb.blue scored R3,500 and SteelSeries products. [Source] [Bracket]

Orena’s final cup of the month – League of Legends – is now underway and concludes on Sunday. You can view the live bracket here.
