Wow. The weekend of 14 and 15 December was a busy one. Plenty went down around the country to celebrate the end of an entertaining year in SA gaming. 2014 looks likely to continue the upward trend, and we can only suggest you get your body ready…

Trenchtown Gaming Tournament

This past Saturday (14 December to give it a date) saw the last gaming event of the year at Trenchtown in Observatory, Cape Town. Due to the holidays and other affecting matters, the numbers were lower than usual, but that didn’t mean the action wasn’t intense.

On the cards for the day was Halo 4 (in a free-for-all flavour), FIFA 14 (adapted to a double elimination, home and away event) and Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Injustice was – as has become the norm – a free-to-enter tournament with a hamper of games up for grabs. As has been the case over the previous Injustice tournaments, Warren Green defeated all that stood in his way to grab first spot. [Bracket]

FIFA 14 saw only nine entrants, but that didn’t mean the battle for the cash was made any easier. Asheer Dollie ensured a clean run into the finals where he faced loser’s bracket winner Sean to determine who walked off with first place and who would be the proverbial “bride’s maid”. The two-leg final was a tight affair, but it was Asheer that nudged ahead to take the win 4-3 on aggregate and bag himself R250 for his effort. Sean went home with R150 in his pocket. [Bracket]

The Halo 4 tournament featured 11 players who each had nine matches to accumulate enough placing points to finish top eight, and participate in the three map final. Pupsky – the favourite due to previous wins – looked untouchable in all his rounds and grabbed eight points (top placing) in all his qualifying rounds to end with 72 points. Capital Gainz booked his place in the final almost as comprehensively with a total of 66 points. The players that rounded off the top eight were: Ziyaad, Dashburner, Sokies, Stefan, Pen6uin 2000 and Griffin. The final was played over three maps with the accumulated highest number of kills determining the winner and placings. It didn’t take long for Pupsky to make his dominance known by getting 48 kills on the first map, with Ziyaad being his closest opponent on 33. Pupsky continued this form over the next two maps to accumulate a total of 139 kills to second place Ziyaad’s 97 kills. Capital Gainz came in third with 85 kills. The top three finishers all walked off with cash prizes for their efforts on the day.

The Trenchtown Gaming Tournament returns on 18 and 19 January 2014 and will feature Call of Duty Ghosts (4v4) on the Saturday, and FIFA 14 and Injustice on the Sunday. Details and pre-registrations soon, as well as changes to prize pools and pre-registration pricing.

IMG_3644Games On Ghosts Tournament

Nine teams over two platforms (Xbox 360 and PS3) hit Games On Gaming Lounge in Rondebosch on Sunday 15 December for some four-on-four Ghosts action.

Five of the teams faced off on Xbox, with seven (some of the teams played on both platforms) doing battle on PS3. It didn’t seem to matter which platform some of the teams played on, as the end results were identical. Team Astra and Team Vinco made the finals on both platforms, and in both instances Astra were the victors over Vinco. The two teams each scored a hamper of prizes that included cash, vouchers, NAG magazines and more.

FIFA Champs

Monthly FIFA 14 event FIFAChamps hosted their final tournament of the year at Lounge Relax Play on Saturday 14 December. In attendance were 17 players vying for the R1000 first prize up for grabs. The final was contested between Yazeed Dollie (brother of Trenchtown winner Asheer) and Lee. The match went to extra time, where Yazeed grabbed the winner to ensure the game ended 2-1 in his favour.

Online tournament hosts Orena hosted their inaugural Quake Live tournament, which held the finals on Sunday. 30 registered players battled it out until there was only one left standing. That one was Ph4ntom, who went via the loser’s bracket to defeat Detrony in the final and bag R2000 and an EPIC MLG Sensei Gaming Mouse. [Bracket]

MWEB First Recon

MWEB Gamezone hosted their first tournament of the Call of Duty Ghosts season which culminated in the finals being played on Saturday and streamed live to the community.

Of course, there was the small matter of getting out of the semi-finals first for the four teams that had made it from the starting 42. Favourites (they had managed an unprecedented run over the Black Ops 2 season) Team Adept faced off against relative newcomers UNDL Opulence, while Team Astra had stalwarts High 5 White to deal with.

In the end it was the two A’s that prevailed to set up a slightly familiar final. Astra and Adept have had many encounters in finals recently, with Adept generally besting the younger team. Saturday’s final proved no different, but it did take all five maps to come to the result. The match swung to-and-fro with Adept claiming the lead, only for Astra to level things. The fifth map decided things, and Adept held it together to grab the match 3-2 and secure their first win of the Ghosts season and the prizes sponsored by Incredible Connection.

The matches are available via the MWEB GameZone Youtube channel or unedited on (Part 1 & Part 2).

The MSSA is planning to run the Provinces as franchises, but to do so, they still require Provincial Directors for the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal, Limpopo, Northern Cape, North West and Western Cape. So pretty much everywhere…

If you’re keen to be a part of this, you can e-mail And no, I doubt there is a salary involved.
