Fairmont High School FIFA 14 Tournament

A chance discussion led to what will be the first of many school gaming events. Thanks to Elize Crouse, the Computer Applications Technology teacher at Fairmont High School in the northern suburbs of Cape Town, Monday 2 December saw the roll out of a new programme aimed at school pupils which goes straight to the source to get them all more aware of competitive gaming in South Africa.

Starting with FIFA 14 and 50 players, the tournament was sponsored by Tritton (via their local distributor), MWEB Gamezone, Krafts by Witch Knight and Incredible Connection. It took around 46 matches, and over 120 goals to get a winner, but only after a final that was a battle until the last minute for Devon Keys, who grabbed the Tritton Pro+ headset up for grabs against Nathi Skade. Nathi’s 1-0 loss didn’t mean he left empty-handed, and he bagged a Speedlink Scylla headset for his day of virtual football.

There was plenty of talent on display and a lot of potential eSports stars of the future. In conjunction with MWEB Gamezone, the plan is to expand the Gamers in Beta training programme to incorporate more schools and more titles.

Games On

Games On Gaming Lounge in Rondebosch hosted a Call of Duty Black Ops 2 (yes) and Ghosts free-for-all tournament on Saturday 30 November. Unfortunately, we couldn’t be in attendance to cover it ourselves (zombies can’t be everywhere these days… but… we’re behind you right now…) but by the account of venue owner, Richard van Wyk, they had “a great turnout, a few clans, a few wildcards….it was great FUN!”

The winner of each event was:
Call of Duty: Ghosts – JUNAID HOOSAIN
Call of Duty: Black Ops II – COLE GOLDIE

We can also tell you that should you be keen to try out the Xbox One, Games On has brought in two for use at their venue. Yes. Head to Riverside Mall in Rondebosch and get your hands on Microsoft’s new console months before it is locally released.

Full race results:

The busy chaps at Orena have been hosting tournaments like they’re trying to cram them in before the end of the world.

They recently completed their Dota 2 Cup – which was one of (if not the) biggest in South Africa. 64 teams registered for the tournament which had prizes sponsored by NAG Magazine and SteelSeries. The final was fought between two of SA’s best known clans in Energy eSports and Bravado Gaming. Energy proved the stronger of the two on the day and beat Bravado 3-1 to claim the win and first prize of R5000 cash and five Navi SteelSeries Sensei RAW Mice. Bravado took home R2500 cash and five SteelSeries QcK+ Navi Mousepads, while third place ISIS/WAC bagged R1000 in cash. Full bracket is available here.

The tournaments continue with a CS: GO cup – which is currently in round two and features 25 teams – and the upcoming Quake Live cup which still has registrations open until 9 December.

Tournament rules are available here.
PS3 teams can enter here.
Xbox 360 teams can enter here.

Just completed is the Battlefield 4 Insta-Clash Cup #2 which saw –BFC-PubHeroes beat Sisera in the final. [More on DGL]

Bravado Gaming managed to overcome ApG.Apollo in the Battlefield 4 Insta-Clash Cup #1. [More on DGL]

Dreamhack Winter 2013

The two South Africans – Dimitri ‘Detrony’ Hadjipaschali and Stephen ‘Ph4ntom’ Cloete – who played at Dreamhack Winter 2013 faced tough competition in their Quake Live tournament, and sadly failed to make it out of the group stages. Detrony finished fifth in his group, while Ph4ntom finished sixth in his. The pair finished with a win/loss ratio of 3:4 and 2:5 respectively.

Organised Chaos

Organised Chaos was certainly more organised they chaotic this past weekend. We attempted to do a headcount ourselves, but, well, let’s just say there were a lot of humans in the venue. And a few brains too.

Photos from the event are available in the OC Photo Album.
