South African gaming – and by that matter South Africa in general – has a long weekend ahead of it. And to celebrate, FanCon is happening in Cape Town. So if you’re looking to add some geek culture to your extended weekend, then you have the perfect event to do just that.

Upcoming Events
ACGL have a number of online tournaments happening over this weekend, including Fortnite, Call of Duty, Rocket League and more. All the necessary details and registration pages are available here. You can also start registering for May’s ‘Minor LANs’ for FIFA 18, Injustice 2 and Call of Duty.
It is quiet weekend which lies ahead of you:
- Xbox Playdates ZA have not announced their May play dates yet, but we suspect they will be every Wednesday from 8pm and selected Fridays from 9pm. You can get more information here about the regular gaming play dates.
- Mettlestate is hosting the ROG Valkyrie League for CS:GO currently. You can catch two matches a week from the tournament every Wednesday from 7pm until 30 May. Tune in to the action here.
- E-Diski Challenge is a FIFA 18 tournament scheduled for 2m on Friday (27 April). Up for grabs is R10,000 in this team versus team event. The tournament will be played at the Back to the City Festival in Gauteng. Additional details can be found here.
- Radlan kicks off at 3pm on Friday and runs until 12pm the following day. Entry is R80 pre-booked and R100 at the door. The LAN is in Welkom and interested attendees can hit the event page for more details.
- FanCon is on this weekend (Saturday 28 April and Sunday 29 April). It promises to be “geek heaven” and that promise will be fulfilled at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Details about what can be expected over the two days can be found on the event page.
- The Nexus in Gauteng is hosting a Fireside Gathering (for Hearthstone’s Witchwood launch) on Saturday from 10am. The event will feature a tournament with a R50 entry fee. Find out more on the Facebook event page.

The Energy eSports CS:GO team has made a roster adjustment which sees teenager Gareth “MisteM” Ries replacing Jan “takbok” Theron.
MisteM has come off the back of a three year ban from VS Gaming and has already turned heads since returning to competitive play with Sinister5. How he will slot into an already strong Energy eSports team remains to be seen.
