Let’s get this going with the only thing that matters. Zombie. At rAge. Yes, this weekend is rAge, and nothing else matters. Except for what happened over the last week, which is a lot of FIFA.

MWEB FIFA 14 Launch

IMG_0570On Friday 27 September the MWEB Gamezone crew along with EA launched FIFA 14 with a party at the MWEB Mcave. Around 60 – or 70 (we lost count as we only have nine fingers) – attendees including media with cameras bigger than a human head were in attendance. To go along with all the virtual ball kicking, their were DJs, prizes, celebrities, prizes, food, prizes, drink (non-alcoholic thankfully, as kicking balls may have turned literal), prizes, awesome people, prizes, goodie bags and prizes. And did we mention prizes?

(Cape Town, 30th September) MWEB GameZone and EA officially launched one of this year’s most anticipated gaming titles, FIFA 14, in Cape Town on Friday.  The MCave, located at MWEB’s head office in Parow was bustling with excitement as guests got a first-hand try at the title’s notable improvements and additional features.

“FIFA Gamers have been looking forward to seeing what the latest title has in-store,” said MWEB GameZone manager Desmond Kurz. “With the release of significant features, particularly pure shot mechanics and real ball physics, EA has taken this game to another level.”  The remarkable new features had guests entertained for hours as they eagerly took on the gaming pro FIFA players for their try at a win of some awesome prizes including ROCCAT headsets, Gunnar Glasses, Mad Catz MLG controllers to name a few.  “There are now more teams and divisions than ever before and the addition of legends to the ultimate team mode is definitely going to attract gamers to FIFA 14,” said Western province FIFA pro Morne Roman.

There was an impressive turnout of media including DStv Africa Magic’s Stargist crew and e.tv sports news, as well as the support of media personalities Carl Wastie and Tammy B from Good Hope FM.  Between trying to score goals in the game and waving for the pretty Red Bull ladies to quench those gaming thirsts, guests were seen rustling through their enticing goody bags. In it they found gaming gadgets from ROCCAT and Speedlink, Far Cry 3, a Dell mouse pad, goodies from MWEB, a copy of The Red Bulletin magazine and of course a limited edition FIFA 14 t-shirt.

An evening of first-time experiences, good food, entertaining personalities and lots of soccer action was a great way to commemorate the launch of such an acclaimed gaming title.  FIFA 14’s nod of approval was made apparent by the guest’s loud cheers and enthusiastic participation in the “challenge a pro” mini-tournaments. “ I am so excited about this game, thanks so much MWEB and EA for this awesome opportunity,” said Jason Murphy who was one of the lucky winners of MWEB’s Golden Ticket competition which gave thirty fans the chance before the launch to enter a competition to be there on the night and experience FIFA 14 before anyone else.

Another successful launch of a highly sought after gaming title sees e-Sports growing on both a local and international scale. “e-Sports are starting to be taken more seriously now with the recognition of the skill and effort that is needed to play well. This year saw SASCOC grant e-sports tier one status which means gaming is now affiliated with the same repute as physical field sports such as rugby and cricket,” said Kurz. “We are proud to be a part of this growth in e-sports and look forward to what’s to come.”

Sponsors for the evening included  EA South Africa, Zombiegamer, Blue Catz Marketing , who sponsored ROCCAT and Speedlink gaming peripherals and gadgets worth over R 15 000, Dell who sponsored the main prize, a 1 x 23 inch Dell monitor, Comet Computing for their Mad Catz and Gunnar prizes, Red Bull, Microsoft, and Rectron.

Pictures are available on the MWEB Gamezone Album, or on our Facebook Album. You can also get more details about the night’s activities here.

Game Edge FIFA 14 Tournament

Of course, winning that kind of money doesn’t mean going all the way to France. No, you can go to Bloemfontein rather.

Another FIFA 14 tournament held over this past weekend was the Game Edge FIFA 14 Tournament which had a whopping R100 000 up for grabs for the winner. How we have missed the existence of this event which is into its third year is beyond us, but there’s your proof that zombies do not know everything.

The PS3 event was hosted at Waterfront Mall, and the winner was Moroka Moroka, who bagged a big cheque (literally and figuratively) of R100 000, while a familiar face to Cape Town FIFA players, Talieb Mohamed finished second and scored a Samsung Galaxy Tab, PS Vita and more.

Who says there isn’t prize money in console gaming?

Trenchtown FIFA 13

Keeping it real last week Wednesday (25 September) was the slightly less glamorous (in terms of prizes at least) Trenchtown final (really) farewell to FIFA 13. 26 players descended on Trenchtown in Observatory, Cape Town.

After a double elimination tournament which saw a few new faces show their true skills, and a few more fancied players knocked out a little earlier than expected, it was Grant – who moved through from the loser’s bracket – that eventually beat Brownie twice in the finals to secure first place and R250 cash.

The full bracket can be viewed here.

For photos from the tournament, check out our Facebook Album.

Legends FIFA 14

Legends in Bellville, Cape Town launched its FIFA 14 tournament season on Monday 30 September. 24 players over a double elimination tournament saw Lee (from the loser’s bracket) beat the undefeated (at least until the finals) Fraansman twice to secure the win.

MSSA LoL Tri-Nations

The MSSA (along with their partners MWEB) have announced a League of Legends Tri-Nations Tournament between South Africa, Denmark and Israel. The event will be an online event hosted at the MWEB HQ in Parow on Saturday 12 October from 7pm and should be a real humdinger. The matches will be streamed live online.

As excitement builds towards the dawning of the 2013 IeSF Championships, there has already been all the drama surrounding the lead up to an event of this magnitude.

The 2013 IeSF World championships will be held from 30 October to 4 November 2013.

Each continent has an allocated number of teams that it may enter. Africa, unfortunately, only gets the opportunity of entering one team.

With the political problems being experienced by Egypt, Egypt has had to withdraw from the Qualifying Championship.

Therefore the South African Protea Team automatically goes through to the 2013 IeSF World Championships.

While this is good news for the South African team, it also has a down-side. The South African team will no longer have the opportunity to play against another national team in order to test their mettle.

For this reason the MSSA, with a great deal of help from both MWEB and the IeSF have structured the first ever on-line Tri-Nations Test Match.

The South African Protea Team will be pitted against both Denmark and Israel in this exciting test match.

The Danes are without doubt the favourites, but the South African Team is determined to hold their own.

Even though the Tri-Nation Test Match will be played on-line, the South African team will play as a unit from the MWEB MCAVE at the MWEB head office in Parow.

Press will be invited to witness this historic event, and spectators will have the opportunity to view the game through streaming so that all South African gamers can watch and support our brave Proteas in this historic test match.

The details of the Tri-Nations Test Match are:

  • PARTICIPANTS: South Africa, Denmark, and Israel
  • VENUE for the SA Protea Team: MWEB MCAVE, Parow
  • START TIME: 19H00

Without doubt this first Tri-Nations Test Match will lead to many more and will benefit South African gamers as never before!
