SA Gaming News Wrap

Our SA Gaming News Wrap is there for you and your passion. Well, if you’re from South Africa of course.

Here’s a few local things you may have missed recently from other South African sites:

Upcoming Events

Pretty quiet weekend of events this one, but completely understandable given the exams happening pretty much everywhere.

  • Jukes Club and Esports Lounge is hosting a 1v1 Dota 2 event in conjunction with Game Arena. Entry is R100 per person and PCs will be supplied and the action kicks off at 3pm on Saturday (7 November). More information is available on the Facebook Event Page.
  • Horrorfest (while strictly not gaming) is hosting a pretty unique opportunity to meet and chat with the filmmakers of the original Resident Evil movie at a special screening on Saturday from 8:30pm. Tickets are R45 and you can find out more here.

Competitions & Giveaways

Gaming ExpoCanal Walk Gaming Expo

Last week (27 October to 1 November), Canal Walk in Cape Town hosted the Gaming Expo powered by BT Games.

The event attracted pretty much all of South Africa’s major game distributors, including Xbox, Ster Kinekor, Megarom and more, and offered attendees the opportunity to try out a number of recently released titles for free.

On top of that, a number of tournaments (FIFA 16, Forza 6, WRC5, Guitar Hero and others) were hosted which offered some great prizes, including two Xbox Ones.

The winners of the various major events were:

  • FIFA 16: Mubeen Gaffoor (Xbox One)
  • Forza 6: Matthew Gordon (Xbox One)
  • Guitar Hero: Dewald Marais (Guitar Hero Live Starter Pack)

Our photos from the expo can be found here.

Zombie Fest_01Zombiegamer Events

We were around pretty much everywhere this past week and weekend, but you may not have noticed due to our efforts to remain incognito at some of them.

We were most visible at the Zombie Fest event, where we hosted the gaming with support of Raru who sponsored our voucher giveaways, and made pretty good friends with Monster Energy Drinks.

Up next, you can be expect to find us incognito again, and then on 28 November we will be hosting Black Ops 3 and FIFA 16 as part of the Cause Gaming LAN. On 5 and 6 December, we will be at UCON with an Ultimate Gamer event and more.

At all of our upcoming events, you can bag Raru vouchers.

Our photos from Zombie Fest can be found here, here and here.

#PWND_Merch_01#PWND

Logo and kit designers #PWND have launched their website which offers gamers in South Africa the opportunity to purchase locally made t-shirts, hoodies and team jerseys of their favourite local team and zombies for those days when you want to show your support or cosplay.

The selection of merchandise will grow still, but is limited to teams and other organisations that have their designs and kits made via #PWND.

You can find all the merchandise available here, but if you’re keen to support us at Zombiegamer, you can find our merchandise here.

Maingaming ESWC 2015_01_270ESWC

This past weekend saw South African (as in, he is from South Africa) FIFA player, Sattar Hoosein, play against some of the best FIFA 16 players in the world in the ESWC finals hosted in Paris, France as part of Paris Game Week.

Sattar Hoosein (who replaced original winner of the local qualifiers, Waseem Moerat, due to the latter’s inability to make the trip) got off to a great start when he drew with the current FIWC champ, and proceeded to maintain a good moment to make it out of the groups and into the final 16 playoffs.

In the round of 16, he faced August Rossenmeir, but it was at this point that his run came to an end – against the eventual winner of the FIFA 16 tournament.

Congratulations to Sattar Hoosein for carrying the South African flag high.

DOTA 2SA Dota 2 Nationals

The local Dota 2 community can look forward to a new series of tournaments hosted under a number of leagues representing different skill level tournaments that have already kicked off.

Currently the ‘amateur’ Perseus league is on and offers R22,000 in cash up for grabs.

More details can be found on the website.

Raru_270Raru

Raru have (dangerously for some) added an option to pay for goods on credit via ‘Mobicred‘. There are a few restrictions (or conditions) that need to be adhered to when paying via this option, including needing to register with Mobicred and needing to order over R1000 to be able to pay by Mobicred.

More information is available here.
