SA Gaming News Wrap

Another week of gaming has come and gone in South Africa, and another week will do so again. It’s heartwarming isn’t it?

If you want to see how this past weekend’s Trenchtown event fared, you can find our full report here.

Orena_CroppedOrena hosted their Xbox 360 Black Ops 2 Cup over this past weekend. With around 28 teams signed up – including most of the top teams in the country – the tournament was always going to be a high class one. What wasn’t expected was the early departures from the tournament by teams like ViNCO and XtaZ. One of the most consistent teams over the last few months in the scene has been Adept (ex- Adios la Vida), and the team continued their good streak. Facing off against F34R Prime (who had knocked out ViNCO in the first round), Adept kept up their quality teamwork and took the tournament – and the R1500 cash, five NAG subscriptions and five rAge passes. Next in their sights, Western Cape Provincial Champs.

Full ladder available to view here.

The matches are now also available to view on Orena’s Youtube Channel.

MSSA Western Cape Provincial Championship

MSSA SA Flag LogoIt’s actually too late to register now as registrations closed on 20 August, but this weekend (24 and 25 August) sees the Western Cape Provincial Championships happen at the CPUT Bellville Campus. With all three platforms featured and a total of 15+ titles scheduled to be played, is it any surprise that the event is a bring your own event? I’m talking to you Call of Duty players on console. It has also come to our attention (we’re nosy like that) that some of you are complaining because the equipment isn’t being supplied. This is not a private event kids, it’s MSSA and their rules are their rules. Did we mention Swiss rounds?

MSSA StarCraft II

On the same weekend as the above – yes, feel free to find it slightly peculiar too – the National Team Trials for StarCraft II will be held at the Bozzoli Hall at Wits University and will run from 9am to 2pm on 24 August. The trials will be held concurrently with the Wits LAN being hosted at the venue by D5 Gaming. [Source]

Sticking with Dota 2, SteelSeries has announced an increases in DGL sponsorship. The original amount of R15,000 has been increased to R40,000 for the upcoming Do Gaming Championships. Once again, gaming proves to be serious business in South Africa.

The monthly FifaChamps event moved from its Canal Walk venue to Long Street in Cape Town this past weekend, but that didn’t appear to dampen support (can’t say the same for the rain on Saturday…). Lee Schilder took the title of FifaChamp for August against a “tough” game against Talieb.

FifaChamps will be hosting their final FIFA 13 tournament in September. Details when we get them.

MWEB Kalahari Super 8 Showdown

The MWEB Kalahari Super 8 Showdown continues until the end of the month before it pits 32 teams in a knockout environment. On the PS3 ladder, P41N – Aspire hold top spot, while on the Xbox 360 ladder LOST hold on to top with HTG SA Elite chomping at their heels. The majority of the “big name” SA clans have not needed to play in the ladders as they got automatic entry into the knockout phase, as did the teams from the GiB Pro-Am tournament.
