June was an odd month for gaming events in South Africa. It will probably be the month remembered (if at all) as the month with more cancelled or postponed events than ones that actually happened. Let’s hope July bucks this trend.
The first weekend of every month always seems to be the busy one, and July is no exception.
MWEB is hosting Saturday’s Gamers in Beta Pro-Am knockout. The eight teams and their ‘coaches’ will be in action to see if they can become SA’s best up-and-coming Black Ops 2 team. You will be able to watch some of the games live via the internet.
Ground Zero hosts their monthly LAN at Tamboti Hall at the Klipriviersberg Recreational Center on Saturday 6 July from 9am. R50 per person gets you a spot and there are prizes and giveaways up for grabs.
FifaChamps will be at Lounge Relax Play in Canal Walk (CT) for their monthly FIFA 13 tournament. The event starts at 10am on Saturday 6 July and R50 gets you into the game with R1000 up for grabs.
MainGaming has two events on over July’s first weekend. The first is on Saturday and is a 2v2 FIFA 13 tournament at Fourways Mall. The cost is a slightly eye watering R150 per player, but there is a R5 500 prize pool up for grabs. Sticking at Fourways Mall on Sunday but going back to the traditional 1v1 FIFA 13 option, you can pay R100 and play for R1 000 in cash.
Between the two weekends Joe’s Easy Diner in Canal Walk, Cape Town will be running a gaming event featuring FIFA 13 and aimed at players between the age of 8 and 16 years old. The event is operated by Xtreme Gaming and will start on 8 July at 11am and go until 12 July at 6pm. We assume not without closing overnight. Details here.
The second weekend of July isn’t all that light on action itself.
The big one (and you’ll excuse a little favouritism here) is the Trenchtown Gaming Tournament operated by the 2upGamers eSports Division. Get to 92 Station Road in Observatory, Cape Town on Saturday 13 July and take part in a 4v4 Black Ops 2 tournament, a FIFA 13 tournament and an Injustice: Gods Among Us tournament. R50 per person per game or R80 with a pizza and you can compete for your share of cash prizes, as well as spot prizes on the day.
dAZLAN are at Centurion for one of their two events this month. Kicking off at 4pm on Friday 12 July, you can enjoy 24 hours of PC and console LAN’ing fun for all.
New-ish LAN hosts on the block Delta 5 will be hosting a LAN at Wits on 12 and 13 July. Hit the link for more details.
MainGaming host another FIFA 13 tournament on Sunday 14 July. The tournament is part of their ongoing SA Electronic Football Cup and will be at Fourways Mall. R100 entry and R1 000 up for grabs.
**UPDATE** The previously postponed MSSA FIFA 13 Regional will be happening on Sunday 14 July. From 10am until, well, later at the Jammie Hall at UCT, the best players in Cape Town will be trying to earn their City of Cape Town colours. MSSA registration is required (R75 annual, R5 for scholars) and the tournament entry fee is R50.
A quiet one at the time of writing, but these things change quickly.
Organised Chaos will be hosting a LAN in conjunction with the UCT Genshiken Society. There is a rumour that this event might expand slightly to incorporate other ‘lifestyle’ and gaming elements. The LAN is scheduled to start at 12pm on Friday 19 July and runs until Sunday at the UCT Sports Hall. Cancelled at the last minute by UCT.
Borngamers are hosting (or at least have started an event) the FIFA 13 Charity Cup at Zouke in Cape Town. The tournament has R3000 in cash up for grabs, but is actually more concerned with collecting unwanted and ignored clothing to distribute to charity. Entry is R70 pre-registered or R100 at the door. Limited to 32 players. Postponed.
**UPDATE** The second postponed MSSA event will be happening on 19 July. It’s the North vs South tournament and is the first of its kind and will feature Black Ops 2 and FIFA 13 and Cape Town and Johannesburg’s best gamers. More details here.
… is a desolate wasteland at the time of writing. Again, this will probably change as the weeks roll by, and we will update as we get the information.
**UPDATE** The AWOL 2upGamers Community event makes its return. On Friday 26 July from 7pm at UCT’s Leslie Social Foyer you can see all you buddies and play some games and have a good time – all for only R50. Cashbar and food available.
**UPDATE** Delta 5 Gaming host their second LAN in as many weeks at Wits. The event will start at 5pm on 26 July and goes on for 24 hours.
A few events are M.I.A. at present, or rumoured but unconfirmed.
2upGamers missed June, but is due for a July return for a social gaming evening out.
Two MSSA events scheduled for June have been pushed into July and await final confirmation.
- The EFL also took a break in June due to not enough weekends being available. This should change in July.
Repeat events throughout July…
Sometimes there are some events which are so awesome they happen weekly (and even daily) in a month. These are them…

Please note, if we have missed an upcoming event, it might be because we didn’t know about it. As much as we pretend to be know-it-alls, we’re not actually, and need your help in keeping up to date with all the happenings around this place we all call home. You can also keep up with everything happening by visiting our Calendar. We will update both the calendar and this article if new events are announced for the month.
