It’s that time again. Another month, another host of gaming events happening around South Africa.
The weekend is meant to see the return of the MSSA Western Cape Provincial ‘Championships’. However, this has now been postponed until the weekend of 24 and 25 August.
Another MSSA event over the weekend is the 2nd online StarCraft II schools tournament on Saturday, which will be hasted by Polarfluke. We have not received confirmation of the event as yet, but it’s online so maybe check in with Polarfluke…
dAZLAN host a 27 hour LAN at Emperor’s Palace which kicks off at 8am on Saturday. Registration is R150 per person and there are plenty of sponsors to make it worth your while. Oh, and there’s gaming too.
Ground Zero LAN starts at 9am on Saturday and runs until 9pm. For R50 per person there will be a 1v1 Mortal Kombat tournament and plenty of other games to play.
MainGaming will satisfy your cravings for FIFA 13 if you are in Cape Town. Get to Tyger Valley at 10am on Saturday – with R100 in hand – and you’re good to go. If you need more motivation, there will be R1000 cash up for grabs.
The big console tournament of the weekend is the H.IV.E. eSport Showdown featuring Black Ops 2 and FIFA 13 on Xbox 360. The Black Ops 2 registrations have closed at 22 teams, but the FIFA 13 registrations are still available.
Orena are hosting a PC based ‘Weekend Cup’ for Black Ops 2. Registrations are open until 6 August for the event, but also be sure to tune in on Saturday 10 August and Sunday 11 August as the matches are likely to be streamed live. Entry is R200 per team but the prizes are tasty and total to R5000 in cash, rAge passes and NAG subscriptions. Rescheduled to the weekend of 28, 29 and 30 August.
Another MSSA online StarCraft II event hosted by Polarfluke on Saturday 10 August. The tournament will play a crucial part in the trials for a player to go over and play at Dreamhack in Bucharest.
**UPDATE** Borngamers charity drive FIFA 13 event which was postponed last month will be happening on Saturday 10 August at Zouke in Cape Town. Full details when we get them.
The big one is the 2upGamers eSports Trenchtown Gaming Tournament on Saturday 17 August. The event will feature Halo 4, FIFA 13, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Street Fighter IV and Injustice: Gods Among Us. Details are to be announced on this very site in the next few days.
Orena will be catering for your Xbox 360 Black Ops 2 needs this weekend. On Saturday and Sunday (17 and 18 August), you and your team can compete for your share of R2500 in cash, along with NAG subscriptions and rAge tickets. Registration is free, so there really is no excuse not to enter before the 14 August registration deadline.
Dota 2 players can look forward to the All Otaku Dota 2 Open. The weekend sees teams play over Saturday and Sunday, with the grand finals planned for the following weekend. Registration closes on 9 August and the total prize pool could be as high as R5000 if 32 teams enter.
FIFAChamps are back with their monthly FIFA 13 tournament. The event will be at
Lounge Relax Play in Century City 55 on Long Street and will be played on PS3. Get there on Saturday 17 August at 11am with your R50 entry fee and you could win R1000.
**UPDATE** Enjoy Gaming will be hosting a Dota 2 LAN from Friday 16 August (6pm) until Saturday 17 August (12am). The LAN is free to all and is hosted at Brits City Hall. You can register your team here.
**UPDATE** There’s a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 tournament on 17 August at Abbotts College JHB South. It’s a 4 v 4 tournament with a cash prize for winning team. R100 gets your team in and you must be registered before 11h30. For more info contact pin email: angel_de_la_muertee@rocketmail
Friday night (23 August) features the 2upGamers Community event, which is tentatively penciled in for the Jameson Hall at UCT, and is likely to be in conjunction with launch parties for Payday 2 and Saints Row IV which are distributed by Apex Interactive.
Also on Friday night is the grand final of the All Otaku Dota 2 Open, which makes this one of the busiest Fridays in memory.
In fact, this might be one of the busiest weekends in memory (but mine isn’t great).
There are two MSSA Provincial Championships scheduled for the weekend of 24 and 25 August. Western Cape and the Eastern Cape both have their chance to play for Provincial colours over three platforms and an absolutely insane number of titles. The Western Cape Provincial will be held at CPUT’s campus in Bellville. Both will be detailed in the coming weeks.
**UPDATE** D5Gaming will be hosting their WitsLAN on 23 to 24 August. Tickets are R100 or R150 (with internet access).
Wow, this one is the busiest weekend in memory (see, I told you).
Organised Chaos kick proceedings off at 5pm on Friday 30 August. The LAN event will be at the Sunningdale Sports Complex in Table View. R200 gets you in to the event until close on Sunday at 10am.
dAZLAN is hosting a LAN event at the traditional venue in Centurion. It will start on Friday at 4pm and run until 8am on Saturday. The fun and games is yours for R150 per person.
On Saturday 31 August from 9am until 11pm, the Dark Carnival hosts the Geek Fest, which is “a fun filled day just for Geeks.” And their families. And their pets. Entry is R50 on the day for adults and R25 for kids, but you can save a little by pre-booking here. Along with stalls, activities and cosplay, the ITF Gaming chaps will be hosting an Injustice: Gods Among Us tournament.
The MSSA closes off the weekend with National Team Trials for IeSF. Details – as with all MSSA events – to follow.

Repeat events throughout August…
There are some events which are so awesome they just can’t help themselves but happen regularly – sometimes weekly, sometimes daily.
The Mweb Gamezone Ladders hosts the Super 8 Showdown from around mid-August until the end of the month. Once the ladders are complete, the knockout phase will occur over two consecutive weekends (31 August and 7 September). The game is Black Ops 2 and the platforms are Xbox 360 and PS3.
Cape Town Showdown play host to the virtual fighters in their equivalent of the fight club every Saturday from 11am. The beatdowns happen at GamerNET House on 45 Salisbury Street, Boston, CT. Details can be found here.
Legends in Bellville will be your home for 2v2 FIFA 13 action every Tuesday night. New season starts on 6 August and is hosted by the 2up Cup crew.
The zombies (or at least the one in Cape Town) will be hosting a casual gaming night every Wednesday (note that this is a change from the old Monday slot) night from 6:30pm at Trenchtown in Observatory, CT. The last Wednesday of the month (28 August) will be a FIFA 13 Tournament while other nights will feature some Black Ops 2 and Injustice along with others which will be announced here, there and on our social media.
