I have been reading up on Call of Duty: Black Ops and I find it rather strange how much of a difference there is between reviewer scoring and gamers. The game was warmly received by reviewers across the net, yet I am reading of game-breaking bugs across the board on forums and even on Metacritic.
Call of Duty: Black Ops is sitting pretty on Metacritic, scoring at 90/100 with 41 critical reviews. Now what bothers me is the ‘user ratings’ [that’s you and me] is very poor on all platforms – the Xbox 360 version is sitting at 6.7/10 , the the Playstation 3 version at 5.9/10, and the PC version a desperately low 5.2 /10.
It seems that majority of gamers reported that they have experienced major issues – visually, sound wise and technically. Did reviewers not pick these up?
In the reviewers defence, gamers do historically go off the handle and would easily give a game zero because they found a bug, so this would bring the average score down. Secondly, while we have not tested the game, close friends have reported that an update has made their Xbox 360 copy silky smooth and bug free on the multiplayer side at least. We have not heard anything about the other platforms – so now the score is probably more justified from a review point of view.
At the end of the day, on release there was clearly issues, but the game was critically acclaimed. As a gamer first and foremost, this disappoints me.
