With the proliferation of fibre in the country, streaming is becoming a real career opportunity in South Africa. Of course – like anything – you should expect it to take a lot of hard work and bleeding in the trenches to live the dream, but the possibilities are there. Companies are looking for partners and content generators to sponsor, and keeping the grind going might just get you noticed.

One such success story is Cougar Gaming‘s recently announced partner YouTuber Kyle ‘Pacman10154’ Swart. Starting out as a ‘dabbler’ he now has the aim of being South Africa’s “number one streamer”. If you’re wondering who this ambitious YouTuber is, we’re here to help you get better acquainted with the man who has no relation to the pill-eating yellow character from the arcade era…

Let’s start with the Cougar Gaming partnership – how did the sponsorship come about?

My Boy Geemax hit me up and told me he brought up my name to Cougar Gaming. That evening I got a phone call from Cougar and we started chatting.

What does the sponsorship mean for your channel going forward?

Having the backing of a company like Cougar Gaming is incredible! It actually gives me confidence to keep doing what I do. It means I will be putting in more hours and improving the quality of my content overall!

Any tips for budding streamers in South Africa?

When you start out, get your friends or family to watch. Getting some sort of support helps out a lot. Then it comes to creating good content. Make sure to be playing the games that make you happy and not what’s trending. People want to see someone that enjoys what they are playing. You have to be happy. Streaming is tough, especially in South Africa, but don’t give up. It just takes one good stream to get your name out there. I have been doing this for almost 2 years and only now am I getting somewhat recognised. I’m not saying it’s going to take you 2 years, what I’m saying is it could happen at any time just keep pushing forward and believing in yourself!

What’s your platform of choice?  Why?

My preferred platform would definitely be a PC, because of the amount of applications that can be used on it and also, I feel that on a PC you can be a lot more precise with aiming and so on.

Can you remember the first time you ‘gamed’?

I don’t remember the first time I gamed, but I do remember when I was around 8 or 9 years old I would go to my dad on the weekends and he would invite his friends and we would have a LAN party all weekend long.

How long have you been gaming?

For about 13 years now.

How long have you been streaming?

I’ve been dibble dabbing in streaming for about 4 years now and started taking it seriously from the 25 of January 2016.

When do you think you’ll stop gaming?

I honestly don’t think I will ever stop!

Are you a serious gamer?  Or do you enjoy a laugh?

I do love the occasional super serious game, but I’m all for fun and laughter.

Singleplayer or multiplayer?

100% Multiplayer! I love meeting new people so multiplayer is the way to go.

Is playing online important to you?

Yes, online is definitely where its at. LAN parties now-days consist of people playing online.

Are you a member of a clan?  Who are they and why?

I am not part of any clan. I left my team around two weeks ago due to my grind of wanting to be the country’s number one streamer! There just isn’t enough time in the day to have a stream and team practice.

Favourite game currently?

Counter-Strike:Global Offensive, I’ve been playing it for around 4 years now. Over those 4 years I’ve played around 5.5k hours.

Do you have any hobbies outside of gaming?  What?

Right now, I am super focused on achieving my goal as the country’s number one streamer, so I don’t really get time to do anything else.

You’re stranded on a desert island and a genie grants you five items.  Name them:

A game: Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
A CD: Now 21 (First thing that came to mind)
A movie or TV series: Lost
An organic life form: Dog
Something edible or drinkable: Coke

What’s the most embarrassing or worst game you’ve ever bought or received as a gift?

I don’t think I’ve ever received or bought a game I was embarrassed about.

If you were a game designer, describe your ultimate game design.

Vanilla World of Warcraft combined with the game in the anime of Sword Arts Online.

The zombie apocalypse has happened.  You’re facing down a ravenous zombie horde (which may or may not include members of ZG in bikinis).  What weapon do you grab?

If I had a large assortment of weapons I would grab a Katana!

In the aforementioned zombie apocalypse you humans are all toast.  Become a turncoat and assist the superior zombies or stay with the soon to be wiped out human resistance?

I would fight with my fellow humans!

Thanks for taking the time to answer our silly questions.  What game are you off to play now that you’re done?

Most likely Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
