This week we meet local gamer, streamer and father of two Jaco Fourie – aka LightRay Casting. He has put in plenty of years playing games and has more recently moved into casting and streaming Dota 2 for Esports League South Africa. We spent some time getting better acquainted with him and his (both current and past) history in gaming and video content.
Go ahead and introduce yourself. Don’t be shy.
Sheesh, well I’m 34 years young father of one amazing boy and another on the way very nervous about it… LOL. [The latest addition to the family arrived on 1 March. Our congratulations to dad and mom. – Undead Ed] I work in the Electrical Sales industry but would love to be a full time Esports caster, I would say that would be my dream come true. I always give my all in casting which was my saving grace, while I battled depression. The support I’ve received from all my subscribers has been amazing and I literally owe them my life.
What’s your platform of choice? Why?
I prefer PC, tried the console thing but that clearly was a fail.
Can you remember the first time you ‘gamed’?
I was meant to go on a blind date set up by friends of mine but luckily she never showed up. Ending up back home my dad said come play, he had a pool table set up in the braai area with the PC stacked on top – eight PCs to be exact – having a LAN. I was more into chasing the girls back then so never bothered with playing games. I was hooked instantly, EarthShaker was my first hero I ever played and with everyone playing on the same team my echo slam was renamed to “Stomp” so every time someone yelled “stomp”, I would echo slam.
How long have you been gaming?
Wow I’ve been playing for almost 10 years. I kinda got hooked, as playing Dota and Dota2 was my escape from reality.
When do you think you’ll stop gaming?
Most definitely when I draw my last breath.
Are you a serious gamer? Or do you enjoy a laugh?
I game to have fun, but sometimes do fall in the trap of chasing MMR on the EU Servers which does get very competitive.
Singleplayer or multiplayer?
I prefer playing with a team or with general party members.
Is playing online important to you?
I would say yes. That’s where I meet my friends who became family.
Favourite game currently?
Hmm, it’s a toss-up between Dota2 and COD. I only recently started playing it so still discovering the game.
Are you a member of a clan? Who are they and why?
I’m a member of Esports League South Africa (ELSA) who are sponsored by Ignite Gaming Hardware and Accessories. We host amateur events. Started with Dota 2 but will branch out into many more games across the board. I’m an official caster and host all the games and tournament games on my YouTube channel.
How long have you been streaming?
I’ve been streaming for about seven years. Started out with in-game cast as I didn’t have the confidence to go onto live platforms, and to be honest didn’t have the know-how. I started livestreaming to YouTube about 2-3 years ago and have received so much feedback which helped me so much. My channel has grown to almost 170 subs which was a mission to gain, but managed to get my own channel name – woot woot! To be honest I have no idea how many cast and livestreams I’ve done but I’m not stopping anytime soon.
What sort of setup do you have for streaming?
My PC was built from spares as I didn’t have much money to work with. Most parts were bought second-hand from Gumtree. I had some issues with my stream quality, but a donation from Peaches from ELSA (who gave me a motherboard and I5 CPU) has meant my streams are much better in quality now.
Which games do you stream?
I stream Dota2.
Do you have a stream schedule?
I stream when ELSA has a tournament running which is currently active, and also when I have the urge to stream my own games.
What’s the most embarrassing or worst game you’ve ever bought or received as a gift?
Definitely Fable, and its only cause the disk was broken and the place I brought it from did not want to replace it (still hate you guys).
If you were a game designer, describe your ultimate game design.
My ultimate game would be survival but none of that start naked run around and gather stuff, but rather starting with a community or family then branching out from there. In the community you make choices based on what you feel at the time even if its impulsive and your story line will be effected by the choices you make.
Do you have any hobbies outside of gaming? What?
Not really I’m a gamer. The resolution outside sucks anyway and the respawn time is something ridiculous. But on the serious side I work part time as a bouncer having studied Krav Maga which also helped a lot in regards to me suffering from depression.
You’re stranded on a desert island and a genie grants you five items. Name them:
A game: Dota2
A CD: anything but Fable
A movie or TV series: Boer soek n vrou
An organic life form: my chilli plants
Something edible or drinkable: Jack Parow Brandy
The zombie apocalypse has happened. You’re facing down a ravenous zombie horde (which may or may not include members of ZG in bikinis). What weapon do you grab?
Sunscreen anyone? [Fair. The UV plays havoc with our decaying skin too. – Undead Ed]
In the aforementioned zombie apocalypse, you humans are all toast. Become a turncoat and assist the superior zombies or stay with the soon to be wiped out human resistance?
I did mention I’m a gamer right? This is exactly what we been waiting for… buckle up bitches.
Thanks for taking the time to answer our silly questions. What game are you off to play now?
