Today we would like to introduce you to G4MA. The organisation is both a tournament operator bringing LAN events to Durban, as well as a Call of Duty team. Find out what they do, when they do it and find out how they do it as we asked their team owner some questions. Thankfully he answered, otherwise there would be nothing to find out.

When did you form G4MA?

G4MA was originally formed in 2013, towards the end of the Black Ops 2 year, as a competitive CoD team. However, we underwent a big re-brand in 2017/2018, to become the G4MA we are today.

Who are the main braaaaaaiiiiiiiinnnnnssss (or brain…) behind G4MA?

Currently there is only one brain behind G4MA, and that would be me, Deon “CrE4TiON” Potgieter.

Is G4MA your first experience in tournament organisation?

Yes, it is.

What made you decide to focus on tournaments?

After attending my first LAN, the ACGL WWII LAN in Durban, in April 2018, I realised that Durban had an audience, and weren’t getting enough experience with LAN events. That’s when I decided to take things into my own hands, and I used my brand (G4MA) to successfully host the first LAN event in June 2018, and followed up with a bigger one in December 2018. The online tournaments, I dabbled in during 2018, and hope to make them more consistent in 2019, in order to give the community a bigger platform for competing.

Which titles do you generally offer at events?

So far, I have only done LAN events for Call of Duty, but we are looking at expanding into other titles rather soon (hint, hint).

How regularly do you host tournaments, and where can people find out about them?

The online tournaments happen bi-weekly, with the new introduction of our Fortnite ZA League, which will run throughout February. As for the LAN events, I am looking to run them about 4 times a year, focusing on ideal calendar dates for the community.

In order to stay up-to-date with our online tournaments and LAN events, the community should follow us on Twitter, check our website and join the G4MA Discord server.

When is your next event?

G4MA’s next event is going to be on the 23rd of March 2019, and it’s going to be a BIG ONE. The community should keep a close eye on our social media, as the official announcement should come soon.

The local esports scene is an active one that seems to struggle for full ‘mainstream’ coverage. What do you think the community can do to help change that?

The community needs be more focused on growth, consistency and positive influences. Though we are a 3rd world country, we have the potential to build esports locally, by creating more content, to grab the attention of sponsors, investors and international eyes. We need to work on consistently putting in the hours for what we do, whether it’s competing, casting or content. We also need to reduce the “toxicity” that hangs within the community, as it drives the opportunity for growth away.

What would you like to see happen for the local esports scene in the future?

I would love to see the local esports scene recognized on an international level. Giving us the opportunity (as those abroad) to create actual careers through our passion.

You also have a competitive team under G4MA. What titles do they compete in?

Since G4MA started as a competitive team, I’ve tried my best to stick to the roots, and have maintained our competitive Call of Duty team (the only team competing under our name, at this time). And its worth mentioning, that this season has been and will be our best performance yet. #ExpectUs

Who is on the team’s roster and how long have they been together?

Our team consists of Brandon “DreamZz” Sharp (Captain), Keegan “DRAGZ” Sharp, Mikhaiel “KronikZz” Omar, George “Voguem” Rambolakis and Calvin “CalvzM8″ Armstrong (Active Sub). Most of these players are new to G4MA, only arriving for the 2018/2019 season, with the exception of Mikhaiel, who has been with us since the 2017/2018 WWII season. The team is also managed by CrE4TiON.

What tournaments are they participating in currently? Have they had any highlight achievements?

G4MA is actively participating in the VS Gaming Cup 1, and SACoDBattles. We will continue to compete in these, as well as Mettlestate, for their second season, as we are still figuring out a full-time 5th for our team.

So far we are undefeated in the VS Gaming Cup 1 – Stage 1, and we have placed 1st and 2nd in multiple SACoDBattles tournaments.

Thanks for your time – is there anything else you would like to add?

Thank you for the opportunity! And G4MA would just like to thank the entire local community, especially #CoDZA and #FortniteZA for the support shown to our tournaments and events through 2018 and going into 2019! We would not be where we are without them. And good luck to the G4MA CoD team for the BO4 season!
