Get your geek on at Time Square

If there is one festival which should be on the bucket list of every gaming geek, sci-fi and fantasy freak, this is it – the annual Geek Fest. This year, being the seventh, GeekFest heads to Time Square in Menlyn Maine for the first time.

Geekfest is a pop cult convention with a twist. Each year the event is themed to celebrate different facets of geek culture and fandoms created by geeks for geeks and aimed at promoting geek sub-cultures and clubs to all South Africans. Come join the Geek side as you explore and experience the many passions and obsessions of everyday geeks from 28 to 30 June 2019.

Have fun, connect with likeminded people and experience something unique as Time Square’s Sun Arena provides a state of the art venue for this annual event which celebrates sci-fi and fantasy fiction, movies, series and anime – every geek’s dream. This year’s theme is “Big in Japan” and will see festival-goers celebrating all things anime, manga and Otaku (Japanese for geek), as well as focusing on Japanese culture and gaming.

An array of market stalls will be selling all sorts of geeky items, children are free to run wild in the kiddies play area, and there will be food and craft beer on sale.

Of course there will be different elements of entertainment to entice festival-goers.  Try your hand at Live Action Role Play (or LARP for short) in one of the arenas, enter the E-Sports tournaments, cheer on your favourite robot during the RoboWars Challenge, play the multitude of board/tabletop games on offer, take part in the amazing cosplay competitions on stage, get some tips from pro-cosplayers doing demos and tutorials on stage, take part in Pokémon GO tournaments,  learn some moves from the Japanese martial artists, watch popular anime movies straight from Japan and show off your geek knowledge in the Geek Quiz.

GeekFest is a perfect family day out and South Africans of all ages are guaranteed to find something to enjoy at this event.

“We are thrilled to be hosting GeekFest for the first time. This event resonates with our belief in including people from all walks of life and sub-cultures,” says Brett Hoppé, General Manager at Time Square.

Tickets are on sale online via Ticketpro and www.geekfest.co.za, at Ticketpro kiosks in Edgars, CNA, WeConnect stores, Super Spars and Postnet. Tickets will also be available at the door at Sun Square on the festival days.
