Patcher Believes Next-Gen Consoles Will Not Block Used Games

Rumours surfaced this week saying the Playstation 4, codenamed Orbis, would amongst other things not support used games. Similar suggestions have been made about Microsoft with their future console.

The well known Michael Patcher, an industry analyst from Wedbush Morgan, believes this would not be a good move for Sony, and that he does not believe Sony will block used games’ playability on the future console.

Pachter told GamesIndustryBiz that he doesn’t believe that either Sony or Microsoft will go this route because it simply isn’t a wise business decision. He believes the gaming giants would be making a mistake and that it could hurt retailers, which is not an advisable strategy.

“It would benefit Activision and EA slightly, and would hurt GameStop a great deal. If Sony unilaterally did this, I could see GameStop refusing to carry their console, and sales of the PS4 would therefore suffer, “ explained Patcher.

The analyst explained that if the manufacturers were to succeed with this theory, all three console of the console would need to be on board.

“If one does it and the others don’t, the one who does it will see a loss of market share,” concludes Patcher.
