This ‘free’ update will come out after the “Claptrap’s New Robot Revolution” DLC lands in September and will address the two most requested features that have been excluded from the DLC. Those being a new level cap and a rebalancing of the main game to accomodate the new level cap.
Gearbox CEO, Randy Pitchford, told a live PAX audience that they resisted making it a part of a DLC pack because if they included those features, “you’d have to buy every previous DLC” to get access to said features – a rather noble thing to do on Gearbox’s part one could argue.
Gearbox apparently struggled with how high to raise the level cap from its current 61. They weren’t keen to match the 11-point upgrade that many people paid for with the “General Knoxx” DLC, but 5-points seemed a little too low. Cleverly, Pitchford and crew “realized if we added 8 levels … ”
Yes. 69. That’s the new level cap and it should arrive around the same time as the October 12th release of Borderlands Game of the Year Edition.

So, we’re all currently milking the 25x XP that Epic bestowed upon us in celebration of the ‘Labor’ Day weekend. Some have achieved the lofty heights of Level 100, while some continue to flounder and are possibly wondering if they’ll ever get there – this weekend or any other.
So, I got to thinking, what’s next? Surely, this is not the last of the mammoth XP weekends? Epic clearly wants us to get our wings before the sequel comes along. Short of simply gifting it to us, they must have some more ideas in the *ahem* ‘wings’. But what could possibly outdo 25x XP?
Now, I’m guessing here, thinking out loud, and no-one has even hinted or mentioned this to me. Well, no-one, except a friend (who does not work for Epic or work at all) in a Gears lobby, who mentioned that he would not be surprised to see a 100x XP weekend. And neither would I, but will that be next, or will that be saved until just before Gears of War 3 lands (April 11th 2011, in case you needed reminding)?
What we do know, is that the bonus XP weekends have generally tended to happen on a US holiday, or day of importance, and I think that will continue. Also, there has been at least a few weeks (even months) between each XP event, so that will probably also continue. Another thing likely to continue is the twists in the waves of Horde – Boomers only, Tickers with flags, etc. However, the mostly likely thing to occur is an even bigger XP multiplier next time around.
So where does that leave us? Well, the next obvious day, for me at least, is Halloween. Maybe at 31x XP to tie in with the date and run it over the weekend? And how about Thanksgiving on November 25th? Possibly the last one of the year with a whopper of around 50x XP? And finally, to end with a bang and bring in Gears of War 3, 100x XP on the weekend of Presidents Day – the 3rd Monday of February?
In the end, consider this wishful thinking and all speculative on my part, because based on my current stats, I’m going to need a lifetime of Horde on regular XP to get to my wings…and I just don’t think I have that time. I mean, Gears of War 3 is only seven months away.

Gearbox has confirmed in a press release issued during Gearbox’s keynote at PAX, that they have acquired the outright ownership of Duke Nukem IP.
Gearbox had “acquired the full intellectual property rights of the ‘Duke Nukem’ brand” and this would include any Duke Nukem future projects. More, seriously? The purchase situation was made simpler by the existing friendship between Pitchford and 3D Realms co-founder George Broussard, who apparently play poker together each week.
Pitchford said that, “Fifteen years ago, Duke Nukem 3D helped launch my professional video game development career,” and that, “The Gearbox Software team and I are ecstatic that we have grown to a position to be able to pick up and carry the torch and help Duke rise back to glory in his time of need.”

We have seen a lot of hype around the theory that Move and Kinect will help increase the current-gen consoles lifespan. It seems almost logical that it would help to do so. But is this really the case? If the technology ends up only appealing to casual gamers, would the rest of the gaming market not want to go forward on to the next best thing?
Both Kinect and Move seems to be tailor made for a casual market, but it does look like it has a chance of entertaining the core market to. There seems to be a division on whether this will be the case or not, will the core gamer take interest in them or not? It seems to be very game-based on whether it will in fact appeal to core gamers. If Sony and Microsoft manage to pull off titles that would generally appeal to the core market, then they stand a good chance of getting in with them. If they stick to the very casual stuff, this could alienate the core market and confirm the technology’s casual appeal.

Vanquish is an adrenaline packed action-shooter from Platinum Games for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. It was developed by Shinji Mikami, who is famous for his western touch with Japanese games. Long before we played anything from the west, and when games were pure and always rated for all ages, we were playing everything from Japan. They might not have won awards for their dialogue or storylines, but they generally felt good. And before I delve into it, I just need to tell the less informed about the title – Mikami told his team that he wanted Vanquish to “feel good”… and my word did his team deliver!
Vanquish takes place in the near-future where Russia and the United States vie for ownership of the world’s fast-depleting energy resources, the US has constructed a space station in order to harness energy from the sun. Russian forces capture this space station and divert its harvested solar energy into a blast wave that destroys San Francisco, aiming to force the US into a total and unconditional surrender. In response, the US tasks its armed forces with recapturing the space station before the Russians can annihilate their next target – New York. [Platinum Games]

id Software’s much anticipated RAGE will be shown for the first time in the UK next month at the Eurogamer Expo.
This is an important bit of news as idSoftware have used a brand new game engine - id Tech 5 – which they say helps “take full advantage of the power across all platforms”. So as early as next month we will hear and possibly see if this is in fact the case.
The Software creative director Tim Willits will be hosting RAGE on all three days in a “specially configured, super-epic new auditorium.”
