The MWEB Gamezone ‘Gamers in Beta’ (GiB) and ‘Pro-Am’ training program and tournament kicks off on 17 June 2013 on Xbox 360.
With eight teams up for being trained and sixteen trainers up for imparting their knowledge, the program aims to improve the quality of competitive gaming in South Africa.
The ‘training officers’ (Pros in the Pro-Am) are volunteers from the teams which finished in the top eight of the Autumn Mad Catz (PS3) and Razer (Xbox 360) Ladders, while those being trained are teams that finished outside the top eight who are keen to learn and improve their game.
The teams and players involved can find out below who they have been paired up with for the next few weeks of on-the-job training.
How it will work:
- Round robin phase
Each of the eight teams must play each other once in the round robin phase running from Monday 17 June and ending on Monday 1 July.
In the round robin phase, one of the assigned ‘pro’ players may coach their team via party chat. In four of the seven games in the round robin, the ‘pro’ may actually sub for one of the team members. This can be decided among the players as to when it is most advantageous, and is restricted to one ‘pro’ per game and four games only.
- Knockout phase
On Saturday, 6 July 2013, a single elimination tournament will be held, with the placings from the round robin being used as seedings for the tournament. This tournament will need to be completed without the help of their trainers, and the semi-finals and finals will be live streamed from the MCave.
Please register your team on the Mweb Tournament site. Teams are limited to four players – one captain and three members. This excludes the two ‘training officers’.
In the round robin phase, please complete challenges, report games and send tickets as per the method used in the seasonal ladders. Please ensure a photo is taken of every result in case of disputes.
Please ensure that the captains of the teams add both their ‘training officers’ to their Xbox Live Friends List. Communicate with each other to ensure the availability of everyone involved for the seven matches in the round robin phase.
The tournament will be played using an update of the familiar Mweb Ladders ruleset, with the FAL now being added to the banned list.
The teams and their assigned training officers:
The teams and ‘training officers’ have been randomly assigned, and where possible, ‘training officers’ from the same clan have been allocated to the same team to bring their knowledge of teamwork to proceedings.
‘Training officers’ are to impart their map knowledge, weapon and class selections and other information deemed useful to help the team improve. Teams should listen and absorb the information being offered. Do not expect your gun skills or reaction times to be bettered, but expect to learn more about when to react, where to be, and find a more complete role within your team.
Most of all enjoy the experience, as the best way to learn is from those who have knowledge. Or to fail and never make the same mistake again…

The best of luck to all the teams involved.
Thank you to all the teams and volunteers for taking the time to get involved with this effort. Without the support of the community, initiatives like this will be dead in the water.
