Morning News Wrap (28 Jan 2013)

Breakfast Wrap 01Everyone have a good weekend?  Everyone raring to get the week started with an enthusiastic adrenaline rush of excitement?  Neither are we.  Maybe a little gaming news will help kick start the day a little.

At the moment it doesn’t appear that a day will go by without THQ being mentioned in the news.  Odd, considering they essentially don’t exist anymore.  This time that love-it-or-hate-it ex-THQ franchise Homefront is being talked about.  Crytek has said that in the wake of the THQ collapse and their recent acquisition of the Homefront IP, that Homefront 2 is unaffected.  Crytek said it’s a “firm believer” in newly acquired IP, and that an E3 reveal expected.

It looks like the time has come for Microsoft‘s next gaming console.  Sinking sales of the current Xbox 360 has seen the company’s revenues down.  Xbox profits dropped by $1 billion and the console sales were down by 25 per cent year-over-year.  Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices division generated $3.8 billion in revenue during the last three months of 2012.  This figures is down 11 per cent year-over-year.

That little Android based console called Ouya has seen its controller given an overhaul after feddback from developers.  According to the console’s website blog post, the changes include a move from a ‘disc’ to a ‘cross’ D-pad design, better grip material on the thumbsticks, a more responsive touch pad and a better battery bay.  Along with that, the trigger buttons have been smoothed out, which involved making them “more flush with the body of the controller”.

Speaking of controllers, Logitech will stop manufacturing console gaming accessories and are shifting their focus to PC, tablet and smartphone products.  Until the next-gen consoles land and the profit possibilities improve we’ll bet…

Resident Evil 6 news.  Console players can pick up the new ‘Siege’ mode – a paid for DLC – in March costing, 320 MS Points/$3.99/€3.99/£3.19.  PC players will get a new mode when the game releases on 22 March – ‘The Mercenaries: No Mercy’ mode.  You can read a little more about it all here.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist has a Collector’s Edition which features an R/C plane.  The ‘Paladin Collector’s Edition’ will be released to North American and Latin markets for $169.99 when the game launches the August.  Whether it will be available outside of those markets is not yet known.

A pretty large title update  has been released by Treyarch for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 on Xbox 360.  It has a host of minor tweaks and bug fixes, along with bringing the Live Streaming feature to Public Match playlists.
