Shane Kim, a senior Microsoft executive, said in an interview with gaming website Kikizo that there was “no question” that the company would look to launch a mobile or portable gaming system.” This comes as no surprise seing the success of Playstations’s PSP and Nintendo’s DS.
He said that Microsoft is focusing on ‘when’ to launch one and that at the moment their resources are going into “Project Natal” and for now they are focused on “living room experience” as far as hardware goes.
Mr.Kim hinted that the ‘portable’ would do more than simply play games and the it would use the “existing connective tissue” of LIVE aswell as intergrate with the other services such as Facebook, Twitter and Netflix, which is a movie rental service. He said “we understand that customers don’t want an experience, they want to be connected to the rest of their lives.”
He did not give a date for the launch, and said that questions still remained over the best way to develop a mobile gaming console. “How do we enter into that market?” “Do we do our own device, do we create our own phone?” “Or do we continue to go down the Windows Mobile path, which is that path that we’re on today.”
We will bring you more as more information surfaces.
