It was no secret that with the previous generation, the Playstation 2 dominated as the top-selling console. Microsoft has made a dramatic push with the Xbox 360, making this generation anything but a one-horse race.

MCV report that some major developers believe that Sony’s aggressive and ambitious move into the free-to-play market could put the Playstation brand back on top as the No.1 platform holder.

The Playstation Plus incentive scheme has proved to be a success with the brand, and Sony has now released a free version of SingStar. Developer CCP is creating a free first-person shooter –  Dust 514 – for the Playstation 3 which will make use of the micro-transaction model.

“Sony making that game is a great step forward, and they should be applauded,” Cevat Yerli, the Crytek head commented.

MCV note that Crytek, best known for the Crysis series, is also now making free games.

“If Sony embraces free-to-play as a major way for PlayStation, that could be the key console,” Cevat Yerli concluded.

CCP marketing boss David Reid explained that the he was at Xbox with the last generation, where they were having their “arses handed” to them. So with Xbox being the underdog, Microsoft were trying to do “crazy things with Xbox Live.”

“Five years later, things have changed and now Sony is being more aggressive.

“It is a cyclical business and it feels like we’re coming around to another big turn again,” said Reid.
