MainGaming saw in excess of 2 700 participants enter for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 Fifa 12 tournament, making it the largest gaming tournament in Africa.
Spanning over 12 months with a total of R 200 000 worth of prizes up for grabs, the 40 qualifying tournaments were held in major malls across the country, where over 100 000 goals were scored in 10 000 matches.
Through the qualifying months, the best Fifa 12 players were selected, the top three placed players of each round, and eight random wildcard entries were all invited to the Grand Final.
Participants were invited to a Pre – Grand Final party hosted by GameXchange at the Stoneridge Shopping Centre, where the finals draw was hosted by Pippa Tshabalala. Players were seeded according to how they performed during the year.
The Grand Finale kicked off at 9am at Killarney Mall where the finalists competed for their spot in the last 64 all the way down to the final 16 and then the quarter finals. You can read more about the eliminations and the matches on the way to the finals on MainGaming’s site.
The first semi-final took place between Zaid Patel and Irshaad Mohommed with Zaid winning convincingly with an aggregate score of 10-2. The second semi-final saw Wasim Ebrahim take on Riaasat Ebrahim with Wasim taking that on with an aggregate score of 8-5.
Wasim Ebrahim took on Zaid Patel in the epic final which was to be played over the ‘best of three’ format. The matches were tight all the way and the final match even saw Zaid and Wasims go to a 4-4 score in the final minute of normal time. In the first minute of injury time, Zaid lost the ball straight from kick-off and a promising ball fell for one of Wasim players, who crossed the head of Ronaldo, slotting the ball in the back of the net. Wasim taking the epic win.
The players decided to split the R25 000.00 before the match, so the winner took home a larger portion of the cash and the Samsung LCD TV that EA sponsored.
The truly South African story here was that MainGaming managed to pull-off a tournament of such grand proportions successfully, and demonstrating the grit of our local gaming community. AMANDLA!
Congratulations to both finalist and to MainGaming for orchestrating a truly amazing tournament. Zombiegamer wish MainGaming the best of luck in any future tournaments.
