Eurogamer reports that Sony plans to release Killzone 3’s multiplayer as a free download.

From next week the multiplayer portion of the PS3 exclusive FPS will be available for free download on the PlayStation Network – it goes live in the US on Tuesday, 28th February.  Assumption is that it will launch a day later in Europe (and we will hazard a guess for SA too) but Eurogamer is checking with Sony for confirmation.

While the standalone offer includes all the maps there will be a catch – an unspecified level cap.  This will limit the players rank and therefore also limit the number of skills and unlockable weapons available.

The standalone multiplayer will cost $14.99 to fully unlock.

Some more details of the free-to-play version of killzone 3 have been released by Guerilla Games [via CVG], as well as details of a double XP weekend.

Dubbed Killzone 3 Multiplayer, the F2P version will include the Guerrilla Warfare, Warzone and Operations game modes, as well as the original Killzone 3 maps AND all Killzone 3 DLC maps.

The Killzone 3 Multiplayer is free to try but once you reach the rank of Sergeant I you’ll need to shell out $15 (UK/EU price TBA) to advance and unlock Trophies.

“Doing so will net you a 24-hour double XP bonus, 3 free unlock points, the ability to set up clans and custom games, and access to the Botzone mode to help hone your combat skills,” the dev explains.

For those who already own Killzone 3, next weekend will be a Double XP Weekend. Starting Friday, March 2 at 17:00 PM UK time, and lasting until Monday, March 5 at 10:00 AM UK time, all XP earned in online Killzone 3 matches will be doubled.

The trial version of Killzone 3 Multiplayer will be excluded from the Double XP Weekend.
