Inversion Dev: “Players Should Have the Right to Buy and Sell Them [Games]“

The ‘second-hand’ game argument is a heated and notorious one – many publishers and developers frown upon the sale of the creative code as physical medium, suggesting gamers should only be allowed to buy games new and not sell them on. Recent rumours suggest the next-gen Xbox console could block the ability to play ‘pre-owned’ games.

Matthew Karch, the Saber Interactive CEO who’s currently working on Inversion, and whose studio built the Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary campaign, does not believe that this would be just.

Writing for CVG, Karch admitted that he does not think people should be prevented from playing used games.

“I understand why they would want to do it, but I think the approach should be different.

“As long as games are distributed on physical medium as physical goods, players should have the right to buy and sell them,” say Karch.

Karch acknowledges the hefty cost of games and so he says it’s, “Just not fair to force him to keep it.” Karch says if people buy Inversion and do not enjoy it, “Then why should they be forced to turn it into a drink coaster?”

“For me the approach is to bring the cost of games down and to sell them as digital content where they can’t be bought and sold. If someone pays $15 for a game, then it’s less painful if they need to keep it,” concludes Karch.
