Halo World Champs – Is there really only one Halo team in South Africa?

Halo WC_02

**UPDATE**

The first Pre-Qualifier Cup for South Africa is now complete and ViNCO Gaming took the tournament.

South African teams have a second opportunity to qualify for the HWC 2016 South Africa Final Cup scheduled for 16 January 2016 by competing in the second Pre-Qualifier Cup #2 which will be played on Saturday 2 January 2016.

**ORIGINAL**

We’ve always been pretty proud advocates of the South African gaming scene – both competitive and social – and when an opportunity knocks for locals to participate in major international tournaments, we feel our small but dogged efforts have all been worthwhile.

So, you can understand our frustration with the slow uptake by local teams to sign up for the Halo World Championships which offers a prize pool of over $2 million currently and an opportunity for South African teams to participate in their very own qualifier that will see a team head to Europe to play the best from the EMEA regions.

In fact, slow uptake is putting it pretty mildly. There is currently only one team signed up for the first qualifier scheduled to start on 19 December. Commendably, that team is ViNCO Gaming. Now while they are made up of some of the best Halo players in the country, it does not excuse other teams from entering the tournament because they think the result is a given. No, this seeming lack of interest does not help to convince the international bodies out there that we want these things to happen.

And how many teams are waiting to play the second qualifier that kicks off on 2 January 2016? Even less than qualifier one.

This is meant to be a call to arms to players and teams with even a passing interest in Halo 5 – if you enjoy the game enough to play it in multiplayer, find yourself another three like minded souls and sign up now, because you never know how well you can play (or die) until you try.

The top four teams from each qualifier will move forward and compete in the Final Cup, where the winning team will secure $500 and a trip to Europe to compete against 11 other qualifying teams from the UK, Germany, France, Middle East and the rest of Europe. The top four teams in that event (scheduled for 6 and 7 February 2016) will head to the LAN World Championships in March 2016.

Now, when you see it broken down like that, it all looks pretty simple right? So then get signed up right away before there’s no opportunity again next year. If you’re looking for a team or teammates hit up Halo South Africa on Twitter and Facebook, or even ask us and we’ll let others know via our social media.
