Gearbox has confirmed in a press release issued during Gearbox’s keynote at PAX, that they have acquired the outright ownership of Duke Nukem IP.
Gearbox had “acquired the full intellectual property rights of the ‘Duke Nukem’ brand” and this would include any Duke Nukem future projects. More, seriously? The purchase situation was made simpler by the existing friendship between Pitchford and 3D Realms co-founder George Broussard, who apparently play poker together each week.
Pitchford said that, “Fifteen years ago, Duke Nukem 3D helped launch my professional video game development career,” and that, “The Gearbox Software team and I are ecstatic that we have grown to a position to be able to pick up and carry the torch and help Duke rise back to glory in his time of need.”
