Gamer of the Week: Tiens van Zyl

When the zombie apocalypse happens it’s common knowledge that gamers will be the first line of defense for humanity. Here’s another one of your protectors. Be thankful for people like him.

Go ahead.  Introduce yourself.  Don’t be shy.

Most people know me as Tiens van Zyl and have been playing games since I was about 7. Working as a Senior Systems Engineer at an outsource IT company. After hours musician, gamer and tech geek.

What’s you platform of choice?  Why?

PC. The PC is my primary source of entertainment and work. Using a PC has endless uses and it just makes sense to me to use it as a gaming platform too.

Can you remember the first time you ‘gamed’?

In 1986 when my dad brought home our IBM Olivetti 386. The first game we played was space invaders.

How long have you been gaming?

I’ve been gaming from 1986 to 2000. I started again in 2009 when I bought a new PC to start playing online.

When do you think you’ll stop gaming?

Probably when the grim reaper gets to me. That’s if I’m not able to headshot him first.

Are you a serious gamer?  Or do you enjoy a laugh?

Both really. Serious when playing in leagues with my teams but mostly to have a laugh with friends and have fun.

Singleplayer or multiplayer?

Is playing online important to you?

Very important. It’s a stress release after a crap day at work and you get to socialise with friends that are 100’s of km’s away from you.

Are you a member of a clan?  Who are they and why?

I am a very proud member of [SS] aka Soul Slayers. They are all personal friends of mine and it’s a place to call home and build camaraderie.

Favourite game currently?

Company of Heroes 2. Yes still in Beta [At the time of writing – Undead Ed]but enjoying it a lot.

Do you have any hobbies outside of gaming?  What?

I play bass guitar (need a spot in a metal band any takers?), sailing, going on trips with my bike and the Mrs, setting up Virtual Machines to test new technology, blogging, cycling.

You’re stranded on a desert island and a genie grants you five items.  Name them:

A game: rFactor 2
A CD: Slayer – Decade of Aggression
A movie or TV series: Airheads
An organic life form: My German Sheppard
Something edible or drinkable: A bottle of Jack

What’s the most embarrassing or worst game you’ve ever bought or received as a gift?

Brutal Legend.

If you were a game designer, describe your ultimate game design.

I play bass, I’m not creative at all 😉

The zombie apocalypse has happened.  You’re facing down a ravenous zombie horde (which may or may not include members of ZG in bikinis).  What weapon do you grab?

Go big or go home, the Rooivalk.

In the aforementioned zombie apocalypse you humans are all toast.  Become a turncoat and assist the superior zombies or stay with the soon to be wiped out human resistance?

Stay with the human resistance and try to kill as many Zombies as possible. [Just as we were starting to like you… – Undead Ed]

Thanks for taking the time to answer our silly questions.  What game are you off to play now that you’re done?

I see Avid-Angel online so it’s going to be Battlefield 3.

We welcome all gamers, regardless of age, sex, creed, platform or whether you’re human or zombie.  There’s no discrimination around here, so feel free to contact us if you are keen to feature in this column in the future at and we’ll think about – after you’ve sent us a sample of your braaaaaaiiiiinnnnsss.
