At Monday’s Microsoft E3 media briefing, Cliff Bleszinski helped unveil a new side-scrolling platform shooter called Shadow Complex. In an interesting move it is being developed using the Unreal Engine 3 by Chair, the same people who brought us the Xbox LIVE Arcade title, Undertow. Shadow Complex is also on XBLA and will be released this winter (in the Southern Hemisphere) as part of the Summer of XBLA.
One of the main highlights of the game is the visuals. The game is played entirely on a 2D plane as most old school platform shooters are, but the graphics are all 3D. And they are done with a lot of depth. Many areas go back a long way from where the action is and at times the camera pans out to show you how much there is in the foreground as well.
The game features a lot of traditional shooting mechanics and adventuring. But Chair has a few tricks up their sleeves as well. One unique gun they showed shoots goo which can be used to create cover or make an impromptu stairway to get to previously unreachable places. The environment can also be used in many areas to get past enemies or achieve objectives.
The best way to see what this game is all about is to see it in action. Below is the official trailer.
